Taliban set terms to cease fire - thenews.com.pk

The offer was made to this correspondent in a letter sent by Punjab TTP Amir Asmatullah Muawiya and was endorsed by the spokesman of the TTP Ehsanullah Ehsan in a telephonic call from an unknown place.

The letter calls for repeal of all laws in Pakistan which are repugnant to Islam and says the Constitution should be re-written in the light of the Quran and Sunnah.

Ehasnullah Ehsan in his telephonic message to this correspondent after the TTP proposal was received said it had the full backing of the TTP and it should be considered as the TTP position.

The letter says TTP was dragged into a war with Pakistan from the Afghanistan and Kashmir fronts and the government and the army were responsible for this.

The war with the TTP was started by the army and they are only defending themselves which is their religious right, the TTP letter said.

It said any religious scholar will confirm that the defence of dignity, self-respect, life, property and faith was the right of every Muslim and fighting for this right is called Jehad.

The TTP said the Pakistan Army should become a “Pure Islamic Army” and not act as mercenaries for America.

“Instead of taking out guns against Muslims (Ahle Islam), the Pakistan Army should prepare to take revenge for the 1971 war (with India). This will also add the potential of Kashmiri mujahideen to our forces,” the TTP said.

Strings Attached: Govt rejects TTP

Interior Minister Rehman Malik has rejected any offer of a ceasefire unless it comes from the TTP leader himself. “I reject all these offers, and any future claims, of Ehsanullah Ehsan, unless and until Hakeemullah Mehsud owns them himself.”
Talking to journalists at Sukkur Airport before leaving for Garhi Khuda Bux, he urged Mehsud to come out of hiding and confess all his terrorist activities before the people of Pakistan.
A second government official, who asked not to be identified, dismissed the ceasefire proposal as “preposterous”.
“They are a bunch of criminals. This is not the Afghan Taliban. They are not open to talks,” the official said.
“No one can take such an offer or terms seriously. The TTP is not a proper entity, certainly not one any government can negotiate with.”

Taliban kills 21 kidnapped Pakistani soldiers - Hindustan Times

Twenty one Pakistani security personnel -- kidnapped by the Taliban from check posts near Peshawar -- were gunned down by the militants on Sunday, police officials said.

The bullet-riddled bodies of the policemen were found in Jabai area of Frontier Region Peshawar, located a short distance from the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, shortly after midnight.
They were reportedly shot dead at a cricket ground.

Two more kidnapped security personnel escaped and one of them was seriously injured.

One of these personnel alerted local authorities, who found the bodies.

The Taliban had kidnapped 23 personnel of the Levies militia after overrunning three check posts early on Thursday.

Over 200 militants armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades had attacked the posts.

Two security personnel were killed in the attack.

The attackers, who were wearing uniforms of security forces, had taken away weapons and vehicles from the check posts.

Seven more victims of the Taliban war on education - Asia - World - The Independent

Seven aid workers including five female teachers were shot dead on their way home from a community centre today in the latest attack highlighting the dangers confronting women working in Pakistan.

The humanitarian staff were ambushed by gunmen who stopped a van taking them home. The gunmen reportedly ordered a child who was in the van to get out, and then sprayed the vehicle with automatic gunfire. The driver was seriously injured.

Actually Lahore is the closest, you can even catch radio stations from Amritsar. Last week my brother went to India by taking a cab to the Wagah border from Lahore and then was driven to Amritsar and caught a flight from there to Delhi.

The state just doesn't have the resources or political will. Our GDP to tax ratio is an abysmal 9% at best, really should be near 20%. We are short on funding and manpower for policing (most are used for security escorts of politicians, bureaucrats etc.), justice, paramilitary etc. We need serious police and judicial reforms, but nobody wants to do that because there's a shytload of money to be made in a corrupt system.

Politicians are also afraid of speaking up against terrorists - those that do are targeted - just last week they killed Bashir Bilour, a vocal anti-Taliban senior minister from the Bilour family in KP, who have been political stalwarts for decades. The current government is also focused on the next election and have made alliances with the Sunni Ittehad Council, while the main opposition party PML-N has always used religious parties for support as well.

The Ummah!
Everything they demanded besides the revenge war with India seems about right. Pakistans constitution and basis of its foundation don't go together very well. talys are right in the sense it needs to be rewritten.
