Live-Action Gundam Movie Announced by Legendary
Another mecha franchise is getting the silver screen treatment, as Legendary announced today at Anime Expo that the Mobile Suit Gundam series will be receiving a live-action movie. Due to a collaboration with Sunrise, the film itself will take place in the “Universal Century” timeline that so many anime, manga and video games of the franchise have been set in.
Regarded as one of the most well-known and influential anime series ever, Gundam has been attempted as a live-action film multiple times in the past. The only time those efforts have come to fruition was in the recent Ready Player One from earlier this year. While Ready Player One featured a mecha cameo, the newly announced film will focus solely on the Mobile Suit Gundam property.

The original anime premiered in 1979 and focuses on the war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation, with the series’ protagonist being teen civilian mechanic Amuro Ray. Thanks to his skills, Ray ends up piloting the RX-78-2 Gundam to defend his colony during the war.
Gundam has quite the legacy and continues to this day. Currently, the franchise lives on through the Build Divers anime and next year’s Hathaway’s Flesh film. Its cultural impact has helped another Legendary franchise find purchase: Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.
