Actually, as great as this would be...it's false. :mjcryhubie:
Don McGregor wrote Black Panther vs. The "Clan", not the King. Don McGregor is White, however, so it's still relevant. McGregor fleshed out both Black Panther and Wakanda as a whole, and created BP's most well-known villain (Killmonger.)
Kirby wasn't told anything by editorial, because he was allowed to edit himself on BP.
Not that Jack Kirby's run wasn't great in it's own way (it was typical weird Kirby sh*t with time-travelling golden frogs :jordanzooted: ). I just believe in giving credit where credit's due. :bphubie:

Still an awesome story, though. 
EDIT: The harm in sharing this story is that it basically erases the contribution of Billy Graham, one of the first Black artists in mainstream comics, and gives that glory to Kirby. He drew this image below.
