Let's have a mature discussion about some skills we wish we had known, what we are currently learning, and what are some competencies we'd like to gain in the future. There is no limit to the subject, this can be an ongoing thread and hopefully we can all pass around some info that will be beneficial. Say someone wanted to know more about getting into the stock market but never knew where to start, would be great to have a knowledgeable poster come in and put them on game. I'll kick it off

One area I wish I would have taken more interest in when I was a bit younger is auto repairs, I mean beyond changing a tire or oil change but getting into the nitty gritty of various repair issues. I was talking to a neighbor who is retired and now does this for folks outta his garage and I see that as something that is extremely valuable because car problems are never going to go away and what better way to save yourself some money by being able to do the work yourself.

As for what I'm working on now really trying to develop these foreign language skills. I test out as intermediary for both spanish and portuguese but I want to get to a point where I am (if not fluent) then advanced in both, considering a trip next year for immersion purposes.

What about ya'll

The good thing is there's DIY videos for everything now if you have the will and time to learn...very useful for car repairs btw. Most working adults just don't have time, life gets in the way so they pay for the convenience of someone else doing it or get discouraged in some other way. I'm working on learning more about cooking so I check videos from cuisine all around the world and try to incorporate a new one each week. Good thread.

I forget who it was but someone a long time ago posted this site http://fitmencook.com/ lots of different recipes to try, I've done a few myself maybe you want to check it out
My list is too damn long to write. Mostly though I wish I was a really good carpenter. I'd love to be able to install a shyt ton of decorative moulding in my crib. Make that shyt look like a million bucks :blessed:

This would be dope too, I know another older cat who does flooring and other interior work on the side. I imagine it'd be pretty lucrative if you get a team of 2-3 guys together

Props for the thread. Hopefully it will excel. I myself have wanted to know more about stocks and investing as well as how to receive grants and such to better my community. Have often had many ideas but not the means to set them in motion myself as of yet. The downside to the ideas that i think would work is implementation through ssustainable means with little outside interest and demands hampering the vision.

Even with a hectic schedule, ive found my self doing as much internet leg work as possible while, picking up a course at the local college when possible.

By no means do i wish to derail the thread premise but based on the answers given do others think it would be beneficial (to society and more specifically black members of society) if it were mandatory to pick up a skill or trade (if only entry level) in order to complete high school?

once the skill is learned forever has the potential to make substantial positive and even financial change for an individual if nothing more u can cut out on an expense bc you now kno how to do it yourself.

cosign the stocks and investing. i plan on getting on that in the near future. i'll probably start with mutual funds and go from there. dr. boyce watkins suggested just going into your bank and asking them about the mutual funds, has anyone done this?

i also plan on going back to school and majoring in computer science in the fall.

I think its a great idea personally, and moving forward I think its going to be a necessity that people know some sort of skill or trade that can generate income for themselves. The question would be how to get funding and support for such a program.

As far as your previous post about the stocks/investing, I'm currently doing an online course taught by a guy I know regarding futures trading which I knew nothing about prior to the start. Shoot me a pm if you interested in learning more.
