Kinda wanna get a certificate this fall from somewhere. Any suggestions on courses/costs? Where to start etc.
I'm in NYC so I'm sure I could do it dozens of places. I've heard one of the ones to get is the "Oxford" one.
General discussion would be great as well. A few guys here have gotten one if I remember right.

Oxford is where I almost got mine from, only advice I can give is to not take the online ones, do the course at a actual school if possible, don't fall for those Groupon $99 courses, I forgot exactly how much it costs pretty sure it was like $1200 including all the material and you can get $100 discount if you sign up a couple of months in advance, and they have these free info sessions that they do that give you a preview of the curriculum etc good to go to, I went also depending on the country you want to go teach you might be able to skip the certificate all together

Of course any course that's under a G is gonna be :patrice: to say the least...that doesn't mean all online courses are bogus. In fact, I know someone I used to work with in Germany right now with his TEFL. Thing is, I'm not sure he's teaching English as much as he's hitting this hotel owner he linked up with :pachaha:

What happened with Oxford, how did you "almost" get yours?

I did TEFL course online. It depends on what country you're looking at and the program. If you're going through a recruiter they'll give recommendations for approved TEFL programs. I think I paid a few hunnit for mine. Maybe 150. It was fine. I worked in Seoul, South Korea for one year. Check out the website "go abroad" & "foot prints recruiting"

But I think my certification was only good for two yrs. I'm not sure

na its not about them being bogus , although most are, not all. Beside that the reason i wouldn't recommend them it because there are somethings that are learned better in person when it comes to teaching , especially something like learning how to make a proper curriculum , sure it something you could wing for a while and if you was going to teach some like place central/south america i would say for it , but any place your going to make serious money like Korea for example you need to be on the ball from day one

i was going to get it them go to Colombia/panama and teach English, but i met a couple of ppl down there that told me honestly as long as you have any type of degree you could get a job doing it , only headaches was the visa situation, that and some personal things turned me away from it

I know you dudes love your certs, but I don't think this one is necessary. I taught in Korea and I don't have one. I know people over there who don't even have an undergrad degree. :manny:

Now who else wanna fukk with Hollywood Court?

My boy got his from Oxford, he's been teaching in Indonesia for the last 7 or so years, dude has a criminal record, got expelled from his first college and still got a job teaching English. He worked in Japan before Indonesia as well, I'll email him and ask more questions. But to put it in perspective I've seen this nikka 4 times in the last 5 years, he only comes back to the US for weddings or deaths.

You thinking about that expat life breh?

Yeah, I gotta multitask it, but it would be something fun to do and meet new people.
By the time I'm 30, I wanna be out unless I get sucked into the business world.

A few of my friends we're doing it when I was abroad, it's enough for a crash pad, drinks and food but not much else.

Maybe I'll start a hostel, bar, or get an apartment block.

Just thinking in the long-term

When you say criminal record are we talking felonies or?

This thread inspired to make one in the locker room. I'm talking about it now, in there, if you want some info.

Long as you're from an English Speaking country you can teach most places.
I figure why not, I have the time, I have the money for the course.
