I'd like to agree with this because I loved Austin in his prime, but ...

The fact is, these Attitude Era legends are always brought back as watered-down, mass-appeal versions of their former selves. They no longer have their edge, they're presented in a way that appeals to casual fans to draw mass audiences. Happy-go-lucky smiling Austin getting a "What?" chant going and stunnering somebody gets old pretty quick.

If they brought him back as the perpetually pissed-off true bad-ass rebel like he was in the late 90s, I'd be all for it.

But when they do with Austin the same thing they did with The Rock and package him as a mass-appeal, catch-phrase spouting, chant-leading shell of what he used to be, I won't get too excited.

It'll draw of course, and that's the main objective if you're Vince McMahon, but it won't be compelling television to those of us who know what he's capable of.

They wont do that to Austin because he wont do shyt for them if he can't be the same ol' Stone Cold.

He's been content with hitting stunners and drinking beer for most of his segments since 03' but if he has to make a comeback to wrestle he's not gonna be happy-go-lucky-Steve trying to make the live crowd pop. He was taking seriously a damn WWE13 promo, I think it's safe to say he will want to have freedom for a Wrestlemania comeback.

Rocky did it because he loves the live atmosphere and cares more about live reaction than anything else (and he knows that no matter how shytty his segment can come across on TV, he's still going to draw when it matters). I don't see Austin doing the same without quitting again

You raise a good point about Austin's integrity and I hope you're right. The fact that it would be a sustained run this time, rather than a one-off appearance, should mean Austin would want to have major input into the character to make sure it's not comedy.

Still, WWE has this fixation on doing what they think will draw in the biggest possible audience come Mania season and it isn't hard for me to picture Happy Austin cracking jokes as part of that. There are people who love that version of Austin, unfortunately.
