With that said, the only reason they failed is because Palpatine was for Luke. Remember it wasn't just about having an apprentice, he's looking to become immortal and Anakin was too fukked up to help him.

If Anakin dies he will somehow find out about Leia too. He needed Luke alone to turn him properly, and he needed Vader there to force his hand (no pun intended) so that part made sense. He did the same with Dooku. The Jabba/second Death Star shyt was all dumb/lazy as hell (cool action scenes though).

Plus Stormtroopers/guards would just get in the way. As soon as Qui-Gon saw Maul he told those shooters "beat it" because Maul/true Sith/Jedi don't fukk around. Remember when Yoda walks into the Emperor's office:

i don't think the emperor knew that vader wanted to go against him. i mean i know the EU has expanded on this and they have indicated the opposite but going by ROTJ there really is no indication that the emperor saw vader coming at all.

at the end of the day i just think the emperor wanted luke as an ally and he knew the only way that was gonna happen was if he took his anger out on his father and killed him.

at the same time though i believe there is a bit of a plot hole. i can understand the emperor playing on luke's hatred for his father but i never for once second bought that luke was capable of betraying the rebellion and joining the emperor.
