Thurman talks PBC on ESPN, Mayweather
Brian Campbell speaks with Keith Thurman about his July 11 matchup with Luis Collazo on ESPN, wanting to fight Floyd Mayweather and whether he'd be willing to accept a challenge from Errol Spence Jr.

Even before Keith Thurman won a welterweight title and was tabbed by many as a potential boxing star, he was calling out pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. Now Thurman has reached a point in his career where there are many who are quite interested in that potential fight.

With Mayweather, coming off his huge win against Manny Pacquiao on May 2, announcing that he will fight on Sept. 12 to complete his Showtime/CBS contract -- but having not announced an opponent yet -- some have speculated that he was waiting to see what happens when Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) faces former welterweight titlist Luis Collazo (36-6, 19 KOs) on Saturday night in the debut of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN (9 ET) at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida -- about 20 minutes from Thurman’s hometown of Clearwater.

But as much as Thurman wants that fight, and as much as many fans would be interested in such a showdown, it’s not in the cards for September, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s right-hand man, told ESPN.com.

Thurman-Collazo
Where: USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida
When: Saturday, 9 p.m. ET
TV: ESPN

“Keith Thurman is a very, very good young fighter who is extremely talented, but he doesn’t understand how the game goes,” Ellerbe said on Monday night. “Ain’t nobody (on Team Mayweather) thinking about Keith Thurman.

“He’s a terrific fighter and he’s supposed to call out Floyd Mayweather. He wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t. But everything we want we don’t always get. Everything takes time and patience. He’s entitled to say whatever he wants to.

“He’s a young, hungry fighter. He’s willing to challenge the top fighters out there but there’s a whole pool of young fighters out there. Last I checked (top prospect) Errol Spence called Keith Thurman out. In my opinion Keith Thurman can’t beat Errol Spence.”

Ellerbe said Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) has not decided yet who he will face -- even though Mayweather has mentioned possibly fighting Andre Berto or even more lightly regarded Karim Mayfield. But Ellerbe said it will not be Thurman.

“I wish him the best,” Ellerbe said. “He makes me laugh at some of the things he says. He’s funny. He has a great sense of humor. And he got the fight game to back it up. But he’s not on Floyd’s level. That’s no disrespect. Floyd will decide who he’s fighting and then let the world know.

“He’ll decide who he wants to fight and then make the announcement how he wants to make it. But every last one of them, young and old, want to fight Floyd. If I was in their situation I’d be calling his ass out too because Floyd Mayweather represents the biggest payday out of all of them.”

1. Errol ain't ready for that type of fire just yet.

2. One Time been the WBA mandatory since forever.

3. Why is it looking like Floyd is avoiding Porter and Thurman.

4. I can't be the only person that hates to read or hear anything by Ellerbe.

Why are people discounting Errol so much? I think he has a legit chance to beat Thurman. At some point people have to realize there's more to boxing than hitting hard. Skill set for skill set, Errol matches up pretty good with Thurman. And when you've beat the likes of Oscar, Shane, Cotto, Canelo, and Pac....the phrase "avoiding Porter and Thurman" should never be spoken. And yes....I totally hate to read or hear anything by Ellerbe.

ellerbe personally needs to be roughed up again...opening his mouth like he's somebody

the only floyd fights i care to see, post pacquiao, would be brook or thurman at 147

khan not really..a failed cherry pick against algieri gives him the :camby:...he faces brook and lifts his title then ill be down with him facing floyd

spence is not ready for keith thurman now..dude needs to face a top 10 contender who has some juice before i can gauge how ready he is for thurman

huh?

im saying Thurman should be his next opponent and them shytting on him like this is ridiculous

the best is the elite. so to face the best constantly you would have to face elite fighters every time. thats an impossible expectation.

floyd only has good/great contenders to face now. pac was his last elite fighter.

floyd whips them with ease. im not excited about none of his fights now. i been said floyd would retire undefeated in the brook/porter thread.

brehs actually thought pac had a chance and its not like the ww division is trash, floyd just too great for this era.

They can be spoken when you're tryna make fights for them when they're already top 5 in their respected rankings.

Fine, he's the best of this generation but who the fukk is he to tell someone in his division who they should fight? These aren't two guys tryna get their feet wet. These are two guys looking for big time fights becuz they've earned it. I'm president of the Errol Spence Jr Fan Club :heh: but he's not fukkin with the Lisp. Not now anyway. September next year.

Like pat said.... Porter, Thurman, or Brook. Hell of I'm Floyd I'd go to the UK and fight Brook. Brits love Floyd.

Errol spence is the truth. Skill set wise he's on par or better than Thurman. Experience wise he isn't just yet.
