The defensive effort last night was atrocious. Both teams played with the defensive urgency of an allstar game. I don't have the patience to do a full breakdown after that one, so just notes on a few players
- Vonleh and Kanter were reliable as usual. Vonleh is the impending FA that I'd most want back on the Knicks and it's not remotely close.
- Starting backcourt went 12 for 34; 8 assists to 6 TOs; and if not for three technical free throws, they woulda gotten to the line 2 times each. The one thing they did well was make their three pointers (8/17). Mudiay is still showing some of the improvements to he's had one legitimately good performance in the last 5 games (39% from the field on over 13 attempts with less than a 2:1 assist to TO ratio in that span).
- Hezonja definitely has some offensive chemistry with the starters but it hasn't translated to many positive impact games out there. Clarence Gaines goes in on this kid on twitter like I used to go in on Lance Thomas.
- Knox looked really promising. He's so big that he can get his shot off without being bothered even when space is pretty tight. His rebound numbers aren't great or consistent but most nights, he'll have at least one or two standout boards that show promise. Even though the kid is still forcing some shots, he's making some nice heads up passes in recent runs (there's a fourth quarter pick and roll with Mitch that leapt off the screen in this aspect). Where he needs work is ball handling, strength and balance, as well as defensive awareness; two out three will probably have to wait until the offseason.
- Mitch, even at 21 minutes, isn't playing enough. I mean that rhetorically rather than a knock on Fiz; he got in foul trouble that trimmed his time in the first half that cost him. But it's crazy how many plays he effects defensively while he's out there and there are little things, like being more patient with his hands against ball handlers, that he seems to be improving on quickly. He needs to get the early fouls in check so that he can start pushing 25 mpg.
- Trier doesn't look comfortable at PG to me. At least, he's not able to be the relentless attacker that we were getting before this shift. It looks like he's trying to be more mindful as a passer, but his awareness and vision could use work...he missed a few kick-out opportunities last night. I'll be real about this, even Mudiay and Burke seem to be more pressed to attack than playmake at this point in Fizdale's system (the playbook does seem to be expanding a bit at least)...so I'm not sure how great the returns for Trier will be with this experiment, but I do like that he's built a bit of chemistry with Mitch.
- Speaking of chemistry, Lee has none with the second unit. I think that's the problem more than rust. Give it time.
- Dotson shot badly, 0/6 from three and 2 for 11 total. He still grabbed some boards and actually tried on defense. We're looking at a lot of players that don't do enough to make up for their bad shooting games. Dot might not always hit his shots, but he'll be reliable for defense and help out on the boards every night.
