LaKeith Stanfield addressed the importance of showcasing love stories that involve Black characters during an interview with Issa Rae, his co-star in “The Photograph,” on “The View” Wednesday.

The upcoming romantic film is set to hit theaters on Friday, which falls on Valentine’s Day. It follows the example of older films that celebrate love between Black characters, like 2000′s “Love & Basketball” and the 1997 film “Love Jones,” the actors noted.

“We’re just happy again to be able to showcase love between two dark-skinned people on screen,” Stanfield said. “By virtue of having that, show that all love is multidimensional and multifaceted, and hopefully everybody can enjoy their love stories.”

Speaking about the importance of centering Black characters in movies, particularly films that are “purely love stories,” Rae said she was honored to be a part of “The Photograph.”

Directed and written by Stella Meghie, the film tells the story of the unexpected romance between Mae Morton (Rae) and Michael Block (Stanfield) as Morton embarks on a journey to uncover details about the early life of her famed photographer mother who unexpectedly dies.

Check out the two actors’ comments on “The View” below:

underrated dynamic definitely. majority featured, brown to dark black folks (especially women, we need to see more women period. we good but not them. and flyer than some damn issa rae let's keep it a band) need to be seen on screen attracted to and loving each other. especially out of the whole urban despair context. and not white folks dipped in chocolate either. no, us. we're not either mired in street culture or assimilated people devoid of any kind of cultural connection to black folks

now the film itself. lol i'll take a wait and see attitude before i applaud. a nikka like me finds all kinds of poison pills without even trying low key lol

At least he practices what he preaches in real life unlike a lot of fake “pro black” celebrities with their non black partners

Movie was real good IMO. Started off slow but got better as it went along. Very Love Jones influenced which is a plus for me, soundtrack was on point. Only complaint was the back story relationship(Christina and Isaac) felt better developed then the main story relationship(Mae and Michael).

BTW, Issa in that yellow dress when they were down in Louisiana was :banderas:

Saw it last night w/the misses....it was cool, just moved kinda slow

but we saw dark on dark love all the time in the 80's and 90's, literally everywhere.

the discussion needs to be why, how, and when that went away and why there's a need to have it back in the first place

History will not be kind to these first couple decades of the 2000’s, I’ve said before on here the culture’s been in a weird place for some years now. Hopefully the 20’s will get things back in order. A whole lot of conversations need to be had and that’s definitely one of them.
