The differences between the Eastside and Westsides of South Central?
East Side - Historically more densely populated and the original margenalized area for african americans who migrated from the south to escape the terrors of the KKK and Jim Crow laws. Firestone factory was a big hope for many poor moving to working class black families in the 40's and 50's. Eventually the racist owner of Firestone stopped providing jobs to black americans which forced many families back into the level of poverty they had down south. This also birthed many black owned businesses and entreprenuers.
West Side- Originally The west side was primarily suburban and the home to the GI bill granted white american middle class living in Los Angeles. Being that black americans were the fastest growing and thriving minority in America in the 1940s (Despite being only 1-2 generations removed from slavery) many black families from the mid west and other states who established businesses could afford to buy homes on the west. Doctors,Teachers, store owners and entertainers became the first home owners on the west side of LA. Real estate brokers and firms used the white families racist ignorance to their advantage by convincing the white families they needed to move ASAP because their property value would go down living next to black families. Even though these were hard working/ thriving black families the real estate firms wanted the whites to sell so they could then have black families move in for worse interest rates hoping they wouldn't sustain and then the real estate companies would make more money off of them, They were in partnership with the banks and did this to exploit everyone. This would later be called white flight.
East Side- Overall more poverty stricken. Slummy in some areas and resembles more of what midwest and east coast cities look like.
West Side- More infastructure, stores, shopping and food. More modernized well kept houses and suburban looking. Pockets of poverty but overall distinguishly different than the east side.
East Side- From the 90's onward became Traditionally more latino. The east side of south central has always had a higher influx of mexican american immigrants. Many of the chicano families from the east side migrated to other parts of LA in the 80's - early 2000's and further east to places like Downy , San Gabriel Valley etc to escape the violence and poverty. Many non documented latinos were able to find cheap housing and migrated there. Many of the latino gangs on the est side of south central were Piasa gangs in the 80's.
West Side- Gang sizes (aside from watts) tend to be larger. Turfs overall bigger.
East Side- More smaller sized gangs but closer borders and more immediate combat. As a whole the east side has always been slightly more dangerous.
West Side- More of the stereotypical LA accent
East Side- More of a hybrid accent of the southern louisiana/creole and texas accents (watts) and chicano accent and slang influence
West Side- Less diversity in gangs
East Side- More diversity in gangs due to the numbers of black and brown always being closer (until recently ES of SS is now currently 78% latino)
East Side-More allys and death traps
West Side- More streets that don't look dangerous but are gang infested
West Side- Gentrifying faster due to nicer houses proximity to areas like culver city and other work hubs..white people realizing its mostly middle / upper middle class black families and not as sterotypical as the rep south central gets.
East Side- Gentrifying slower due to more extreme gang violence, poverty and very few to none white people within a 6 mile radius
