Never been much of a runner...i generally run faster than most people but thats over short distances.

I switched jobs recently, to a more stationary gig...i quickly put on a few pounds so i started hitting the treadmill a little harder at the gym, generally no more 2 miles 3-4 times a week. My knees have started to ache like crazy my right knee in particular...ive tried to just tough it out. Its not getting any worse but its not getting any better...and its been about 2 months and no change.

Should i fall back from running or is this just the pain of my body getting used to it. Is there something i can do to minimze whats going on?

my biggest issue w pain when i first started was shoes. i was wearing the wrong shoes for my footing/pronation. this could be part of the cause. if you haven't yet i would go to a runners store and have them check your step and make sure you're wearing the appropriate sneakers. just some food for thought.

Yeah im pretty sure i underpronate...i just wear a generic pair of nike airs to the gym.

How much would the damage be for the correct shoes?

the assessment is usually free then the salesperson will probably recommend a few pairs that would suit you and your step. if you really want to save money you can just say you want to think about it. then go home and go online and look for a better deal, or even look for the previous edition being liquidated somewhere else (zappos does this sometimes). for example i run is asics gel nimbus. my current pair is the 14s (the one in all the stores). but if i wanted a backup pair on the cheap i would search for the 13s and see if anyone online has any left over stock in my size for clearance. but on average running sneakers can be as cheap as 85 or as expensive as 150.

Work on your form too.

Make sure you're not stomping. Pounding the ground will put more pressure on your knees.
Don't over stride. Your lead foot landing too far out in front of you will put more pressure on your knees.
Get a nice hell lift, and keep a decent pace. Shuffling along and spending too much time on the ground will put more pressure on your knees.

What do you mean by hitting the treadmill harder? Faster? More incline? More distance?
Changes to these where you are pushing your body faster than it can handle can result in issues like muscle tightness. The response would be to slowly increase speed or mileage.
Do you stretch after you run? Muscle tightness can affect the ligaments/tendons that go around the knee. Take 5 to 10 minutes to stretch the calves, hamstrings, and quadraceps after a run.

Better shoes is one good thing to check out. That can alleviate knee pain and foot, hip. and ankle issues..
Where exactly is the pain? Front of the knee? Behind the knee? Outside or inside side of the knee? Below the kneecap, middle of the kneecap? Difficulty walking after jogging? It is possible to get an elastic-type (or neoprene) knee brace with patellar cut-out and wear it while jogging.

You could also look into doing more compact running like sprints or intervals. You can get the same results without the prolonged impact on your joints.

By harder i mean longer distance or making sure i hit the treadmill everytime i goto the gym.

I switched it up doing intervals lately, 1 minute 1 minute jog for 10-20 minutes, it hasnt helped.

Tried stretching better and longer too.

Breh you need to: 1. Go to a running shoe store and have them evaluate your running motion. 2. Buy the proper shoes for your running style. 3. Get some good insoles, the ones that come with your shoes are garbage. The insoles are as important, if not more important than the shoes themselves.

I run 6 miles or more a day. So I have experienced alot of different body pains associated with running(Knee pain, back pain, shin splints, calf pain, hip & hamstring, etc..) The shoes & insoles are essential.

What shoes do you run in?

I have two pair of Merrell's and that's the only shoe I'll ever buy going forward, regardless of cost.

I've run in all kinds of brands. Saucony, Nike, Addidas, etc... But I always run in shoes that are meant for stability more than performance. Replacing the insoles is the #1 thing for me.

Running on the treadmill is not condusive to good knee health...running outside should help, after a break

I'd rate a treadmill over concrete since there's give. Run on a track, trail or other forgiving surface if it's an option.

I get knee pain after 5-6 mile runs, but only when my shoes are starting to get old.

I've never been fitted for shoes ... but I've also never had problems with any shoes I've run in.

So, now, I get a fresh pair of pegasus every six months or so (depending on how many miles I put on them), and all is well.

but, I agree that distance on the treadmill is not the best thing to do. Some people do it with no problem, but it fukks up other people. I use my treadmill for intervals (but not that much, because I hate being on the treadmill).

Run distance outside; do intervals with a jump rope or something.

I used to get knee pains when I first started running and it took me a while to get used to it. I would wear a knee brace but didn't want to be dependent on it. Eventually the aches went away. I usually run in Free Runs but I can run in almost any running shoe. Its just a matter of making the proper adjustments in your technique more then anything. It just takes a while.
