"Killer Mike has long been declared one of the most dexterous, lyrically skilled MCs in rap music. Even Kendrick Lamar shouted him out on 2015's To Pimp A Butterfly: "Critics want to mention that they miss when hip-hop was rappin' / Motherf-cker, if you did, then Killer Mike'd be platinum"

At any rate, in a recent interview with Idea Generation, Mike claimed he's caused some high-profile lyricists to reassess their verses after he's guested on tracks with them, including Jay-Z and Pusha T or Black Thought (he wouldn't specify which of the latter changed their verse after hearing his).

He starts out by referencing Jay-Z's "Poppin Tags."

“I remember somebody tried to insult me like, ‘The only reason you got a Grammy is you’re on a song with OutKast,” he recalled. The reference is OutKast's 2001 hit, "The Whole World" where Killer Mike caught "the beat runnin' like Randy Moss."

“I said, ‘I had the wickedest verse on that muthafukka,’" he continued. "‘Cause what you not gon’ do is not tell me I’m a bad-ass muthafukkin’ rapper," he pledged. “You go listen to ‘Poppin’ Tags.’ I originally was directly behind JAY-Z. Somebody chopped it and pushed my ass down one more. Said, ‘Let’s get Twista in between this.’ ‘Cause I was rapping my ass off.”

He then says something similar happened on Black Thought's “Good Morning,” which appeared on Thought's 2020 outing, Streams of Thought, Vol. 3: Cane & Able.

“Go listen to ‘Good Morning’ with Pusha T and Black Thought,” he said. “Rapped my ass off, and somebody changed their verse and I ain’t gon’ tell you who... When it come to humility, time we get on that track, that shyt is out the door.

Earlier this year, Mike dropped a serious contender for Hip-Hop album of the year with Michael, armed with standout tracks like "Down By Law," "Somethin' for the Junkies," and "N Rich."

As for the always lyrically superior Black Thought, he's currently on LL COOL J's F.O.R.C.E. Tour with the Roots, which kicked off last weekend and will run through November. Grab tickets here.

That's just being an MC. especially one of that calibre, you gotta think you're the best. You have your top 5 and all that kind of shyt but you have to believe you're the shyt and no one else can touch you on your best day

I'm definitely guilty of this and I am the definition of a nobody.

I fukks with Killer Mike a lot, but Twista got him on poppin tags. If they were moving verses away from Jay cause they were too good, you don’t put Twista right there.

Other than that he’s right, he usually brings the heat to features.
