To be honest with you I went the longest without having seen Kids in its entirety.
Both movies deal with Skaters even though I think it was more prominent in mid 90s.
Kids certainly feels darker and more negative. Consequences in mid 90s don't feel that serious...especially when everyone is completely fine after the car accident which suddenly makes the mom accept the group of friends she previously forbade her son from associating with.
Kids has the whole message like an after school special despite being extremely explicit to the point some parents probably wouldn't want to see it.
One of the central themes in Mid 90s is friendship. Friendship is not highlighted at all in kids...it's like an afterthought. Mid 90s has an actual protagonist and even a secondary protagonist whereas Kids' main character and his best friend are 2 faced, dishonest, predatory a$$holes with pretty much no redeeming qualities. In kids several girls but most notably the one with hiv who ended up getting raped in the end. Also someone is implied to have died of a drug overdose and the guy who got jumped by everybody in the park possibly got beaten to death.
Without it being said kids certainly takes place in New York. I think mid 90s may take place out here but seems to be deliberately written for the setting to seem ambiguous.
When I saw mid 90s I left disappointed because the ending seemed to come out of nowhere and we don't know if the conflicts are truly resolved. With Kids you have a very definitive but negative ending. Kids makes me want to beat the shyt out of everyone. This is the most angry I've felt since I saw alpha dog.
Kids takes place in the mid 90s. Mid 90s is about kids.
Did any of you see both? Which did you like better?
