Amir Khan apparently has changed his mind regarding the possibility of fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September.
Khan told Mlive.com after Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night in Las Vegas that he “can’t do” a September bout against Mayweather because fasting for Ramadan would disrupt training camp for the devout Muslim. Ramadan, the Muslim month for fasting each year, is scheduled to end the night of July 17, however, which would give England’s Khan enough time once Ramadan concludes to complete an eight-week training camp if he were to fight Mayweather on Sept. 12.
“It is possible I could fight in September, yeah, because he normally fights mid-September and also Ramadan is going to be a little bit earlier this year,” Khan said on a conference call Wednesday to discuss his May 29 fight against Chris Algieri at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. “So, yeah, it helps to give me enough time to get the training done and everything. So it can happen in September.”
The 38-year-old Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) said after defeating Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) that he plans to fight once more in September before retiring. Mayweather defeated Marcos Maidana in their rematch last Sept. 13 and out-boxed Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Sept. 14, 2013, thus Sept. 12 seems like a logical date for his next fight.
Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) is considered a frontrunner to land that high-profile fight against Mayweather, but reiterated multiple times on Wednesday’s conference call that he is fully focused on beating Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs).
