Kevin Cunningham, trainer and manager of Devon Alexander, would be very disappointed if they beat Amir Khan - and then fail to secure a fight in May with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Alexander and Khan will clash on December 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Both Khan and Alexander are gunning to face Mayweather (47-0, 26KOs) on Cinco De Mayo weekend, May 2nd of next year.
“Right now, this is the biggest fight of Devon’s career. If he gets past [Amir] Khan, he puts himself right back in the mix with Mayweather. Anything else than a Mayweather fight for us after beating Amir Khan would be a major disappointment.”
Cunningham says a win over Khan (29-3, 19 KOs) will push Alexander (26-2, 14 KOs) back in the position that he occupied prior to the loss several years ago to Timothy Bradley.
“Devon has had opportunities to prove to people that he was everything they thought he was, but he has come up short in the past. We accept that, but this opportunity here will propel him right back into that situation and the scenario he was once in going into the Tim Bradley fight," Cunningham said.
