I think he makes a great point, but I was disappointed that there were no solutions presented.

Dog.....sometimes, pointing out the problem is a first step.

Why do people expect an all in one model for everything?

good entertaining video. i agree with everything he said. school/education system is all fcked up.

kids cant stay still for 15 minutes without their minds wandering off. they need to completely revamp the way children are taught.
the biggest problem i see is the way kids are tested... they dont teach you to think objectively, it's basically a memory test, lets see how much of what i taught you can remember. regurgitating sht you were told.
the best thing you can teach kids is to question what they're being taught, and reward those who present questions/counter arguments to the curriculum.

If you got kids are plan on having kids, you gotta pay attention to this. I am not even sure private school is the answer anymore

That's why the Montessori method of teaching, which produced Bill gates and others is best.

Montessori education - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My youngest son attends a Montessori based pre k school.

Unfortunately, they're moving to more traditional methods of teaching the closer they get to grade school since most of the students will be attending public or private schools based on the archaic model.

They're working towards it in way. The new standards focus less on particular content, and more on the literacy require to attain that knowledge, and express it to others. The problem, as I see it, it that this approach requires a certain amount of motivation on the part of students.

They tell teacher "dont just tell them" let them find out on their own. Well, when more than half the kids shoot you the :stopitslime: damn near every time you ask them to read something, this approach is difficult.

I truly believe the biggest problem with our educational system is a lack of ownership of a child's education in regards to their parents. You see it all the time. Kids whose parents motivate them to do well in school...tend to do well in school. Its not a mystery. Unfortunately, as the years pass, it seems less and less kids get that motivation outside of the classroom. Why that is, I'm not sure. It like lots of parents today have an attitude of "they go to school to learn, that shyt aint my responsibility" :mjpls:

One thing I realized kids have to face challenges. You see the kids whose parents are overprotective tend to be somewhat slow compared to the kids who are not babied. If a kid stays inside all day or does not do any activities after school, that really affects their development.

Kid goes from school to being in front of the tv for 8 hours, when does this kid have time to process his thoughts, understand new experiences or apply himself. The only time that happens is in front a teacher or standardized test, by then it is too late. Something is missing, because we didn't have these problems at such a high rate before.

Check out this book. It's about how French parent don't coddle their kids and how much more independent their kids are than American kids. My wife ordered it.

Probably American suburban kids, I came up where crack was out of control and there was nothing but broken homes, but I see how it gave me the skills I needed.

By time I entered college I was ready to conquer the world, this is the outlook kids lack these days. All the talk in that video comes down to one thing, kids need to be able to explore the world and challenge themselves. I don't think they are getting enough of that these days, so they are not getting the most out of their childhood.

Parents have to be careful, because all these distractions can make a kid mindless.

i also think that open class discussions > being lectured. the best classes i ever had, k-12-college were the ones where group discussions were had often, it made you think for yourself, it kept you engaged and there was a sense of competition amongst the people in class, cuz you didnt wana be the dirtbag that went to class unprepared with nothing to contribute.
