Injuries are a part of the game but I am not sure people really grasp how great Ken Griffey Jr was.
This is a guy who wound up hitting 630 HR and from the age of 31-40 played just 61% of games. He missed 629 games in those final 10 seasons. Even factoring in some injuries and decline due to age, he would have gotten to 700 HR easily. Probably catches Ruth at 714. Maybe flirts with catching Aaron at 755.
Suppose Griffey played 400 of those 629 games he missed. 400 games is about 1500 at bats. For his entire career Griffey averaged a HR every 15.55 at bats. Let’s call it 16 for a round number.
1500 at bats divided by 16 means you’d expect him to hit about 94 home runs.
So conservatively speaking, Ken Griffey Jr should have wound up at 724 HR.
And I’m not even getting into how many more hits he would have had (he finished with 2,781)
Or how many RBI he would have had (he finished with 1,836)
Edit - I corrected Hank Aaron’s HR total. I mistakenly wrote 756 when Aaron hit 755.
