According to the Sheffield Star, Frankie Gavin (22-1, 13KOs) has become the frontrunner to face IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (34-0, 23KOs) on a date of May 30th from the O2 Arena.
Gavin, who won three in a row since suffering his first career defeat to Leonard Bundu last August, fought on Brook's undercard on March 28th at the Motorpoint Arena and defeated Bogdan Mitic over ten rounds.
Both boxers are promoted by Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Sport. If a deal is finalized, it places a question mark on Gavin's scheduled fight against Chris Van Heerden, for the IBF International title, on May 9th in Birmingham.
Gavin was recently ordered to face Timothy Bradley in an IBF final eliminator for the right to face Brook - but Gavin's side never responded to the IBF's invitation - which added further fuel to the rumors that a Brook-Gavin showdown is very close to getting done.
Hearn had attempted to get Amir Khan for a fight with Brook on June 13, with Khan stating that he was unavailable due to Ramadan.
