Sergey Kovalev now has three world titles at light heavyweight after his unification win over Bernard Hopkins on Saturday night. And he has two options in terms of Montreal-based opponents — Adonis Stevenson, the lineal champion who opted not to face Kovalev in 2014, or former champion Jean Pascal.

“I’ll be talking to somebody in Montreal, I’m not sure which person it’ll be,” Kovalev’s promoter, Kathy Duva of Main Events, said at the post-fight press conference. “There’s two fighters in Montreal, so we’ll see. I am interested to see how this story ends, where it goes next.

”It’s also possible that Stevenson and Pascal could face each other in a big event for Montreal and the Canadian province of Quebec. No contracts have been signed, but a date had been in discussion for April 2015. Pascal is Stevenson’s mandatory challenger.

Both Pascal and Stevenson have keep-busy bouts coming up, Pascal against Donovan George on Dec. 6 and Stevenson against Dmitry Sukhotshy on Dec. 19.

When it comes to lineal light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events doesn’t bite her tongue.

That’s because in her eyes Stevenson backed out on a deal to face her fighter, 175-pound titleholder Sergey Kovalev, earlier this year. Main Events had sued Stevenson and several others afterward, dropping the case once Kovalev and Bernard Hopkins signed to fight, as there were no longer the potential financial damages that made such a case viable.

Now that Kovalev has beaten Hopkins to add two more world titles to his collection, Duva believes more than ever that the onus is on Stevenson to prove himself against her guy.

“He’s [Kovalev’s] got three belts. If somebody wants to be the champion in the division, they’re going to have to fight him now,” Duva said. “That’s kind of nice. That’s the argument in favor of collecting the belts. Everybody can duck all they want, and I think Adonis has made himself completely irrelevant, to be perfectly honest. Somebody’s going to beat him. In my view, he is a fringe contender who could lose to absolutely anyone.”

In her eyes, it’s not actually Stevenson who’s important for Kovalev to face, but rather the belt that he holds — for the moment.

“So I don’t know if this is about Adonis Stevenson so much as it’s about someday going after the WBC title, whoever has it,” she said. “We’ll find out.”

This is exactly what I said yesterday but nikkas calling me a hater. :mjpls:

how, you realize you have two rival businesses going against each other, so of course shade is going to be thrown

stevenson fights in front of sell out crowds in montreal, he's the lineal champ, until he loses

bernard hopkins looked every bit his age against dawson when his lost his lineal championship, stevenson KO'd dawson with a left cross he set up perfectly with his feints, which was a greater win than kovalev's domination of hopkins, since dawson beat hopkins and was KO'd rather easily. Stevenson looked lackluster in his last outing, but kovalev showed some holes in his game against hopkins who gave him a couple mouses under both his eyes

it's just a game of chicken now between the promoters to see who caves first because this is the only fight in that division

Miss me with that lineal stuff after Sat the top guy of the division is clearly Kovalev.

Stevenson a draw? He ain't even the man in his own hood, Pascal is. Stevenson is damn near 40 and has now missed out on a Kovalev fight, a Hopkins fight and now it looks like Pascal as well.

nikka went from ko'ing Dawson to having struggle fights getting dropped by generic Eurocacs, he is irrelevant.
