‘Karate Kid’ gets spin-off with Ralph Macchio and William Zabka
Mr. Miyagi approves.
In the latest move of a classic film returning to screens years later, "The Karate Kid" is getting a spin-off in a 10-episode comedy series called "Cobra Kai," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The YouTube Red series will feature original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka — more than three decades after the movie became a pop culture staple.
Macchio will return as LaRusso and Zabka will once again play his nemesis Johnny Lawrence.
'Battle of the Network Stars' boasts an all-star lineup
"If The Karate Kid was Daniel's story, Cobra Kai is equal parts Daniel and Johnny's story," YouTube global head of originals, Susanne Daniels, told THR. "Also because this is a series and not a movie, we really wanted to reimagine how the story was told. Changing the name made sense as part of that."
The comedy, due out in 2018, is set to follow Johnny as he decides to reopen Cobra Kai dojo and once again finds himself feuding with his longtime enemy, LaRusso, the Hollywood Reporter repots.
Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are reuniting for “Karate Kid” spin-off.
Macchio starred in all three "Karate Kid" films in 1984, 1986 and 1989, while Zabka only had roles in the first two. In 1994, a fourth version of the film hit theatres titled "The Next Karate Kid" starring Constance Towers and Hilary Swank.
YouTube Red is the online video platform's own subscription-based streaming service.
'Will & Grace' revival already renewed for season 2
A new take on "Karate Kid" was announced as other classics also find themselves getting reboots or remakes.
Cult classic TV show, "Baywatch," hit theaters in movie form over the summer and Vin Diesel just declared he would remake "Miami Vice" earlier this week.
