I've been doing this with the pieces I have designed on spreadshirt just so I can know what needs to be adjusted and changed in regards to design size, the ink used, and overall quality control. Since I just design the items and am not preset in the actual production of the item other than in post-production, I've just had to do this with certain items given my budget constraints.
