Gandolfini passing solidified it but up until then they left it wide open as fukk still a horrible ending to probably the best show of all time.
Surprisingly the ending doesn’t mess up the rewatch. Compare that to GOT where the ending /last season completely makes any rewatch pointless.

Yeah it was New York with the help of maybe Paulie or patsy. David chase said his other idea for the ending was Tony driving to a meeting with New York and it cuts to black as he goes thru a tunnel
Definitely Patsy, his son was engaged to Mead and probably got the info from her on where they were going to meet for dinner. Patsy got the okay from NY as the way Phil got hit probably left a bad taste in their mouths...It is one thing to do it but to do it in front of his grandkids is a major no-no....It was payback for Spoons, Patsy's twin brother as well. Patsy had the most to gain, he'd be installed as a puppet boss for NY as he was probably the most senior ranking guy left at the final episode....
Remember what Johnny said to the other prisoners in the sick ward, when someone who was troublesome stopped earning, then they can get got...Tony wasn't a viable earner since he was taking half the kick up from NY and lost his biggest earners Vito and Ralphie before the war...
- Tony was a constant pain on negotiations with the Esplanade, going back to Carmine Sr.

- His cousin hit Phil's kid bro and nearly killed Phil himself without an OK from Johnny or the Commission
- Though he couldn't prove it, Fat Dom, one of Phil's capos goes missing in NJ, Butchie suspects but another strike against Tony anyway
Paulie and Patsy would be easier to deal with, less baggage..
Also, Tony is nearly broke, he won't have enough to fight the major rico against him seeing as Junior and Johnny Sac were a bit more wise with their money and still ended up bankrupt....
Tony doesn't have a family that can produce that type of bread anymore, you think Benny, Paulie, Patsy, and Little Pauley can kick up enough to help him beat a major RICO case with a decade of evidence piled up against him?
