A few people asked for a listing of Juneteeth Day Events going on in their locales, so I thought to create this thread as a reference to have for any events, meet ups, commemorations, area happenings etc. I'm posting up for DMV and NYC, but if anyone wants to include other areas, feel free to add on.

Background:
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today.

10th Annual Juneteenth 2019 Festival - "Back to the Future" (Free)
Juneteenth is the official Celebration of the Emancipation of Slavery generally celebrated on June nineteenth (19th). Think of it as the African American 4th of July (without the fireworks- that is). In honor of Father's Day and the weekend, we celebrate Juneteenth; June 15 (Fifteenth). There will be vendors selling crafts and food (really good food), activities for kids, games for parents and their children, a wonderful showcase, great raffle prizes and Trivia about the African American journey. This is just a short list of all the great things that will happen at Juneteenth so if you want to stay current on all the updates please register.

This year, Umoja Events will be celebrating 10 Years of serving the community. The Annual Juneteenth Festival titled "Back to The Future":

The Abolitionist Museum hosts an annual Juneteenth Celebration, recognizing the June 19th Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which gave African-American slaves their freedom. The evening of celebration at this historic site, where abolitionists once lived and hid African-Americans, features Shawn Lee's spiritual healing performance; Indoda Entsha, West African drumming group directed by E. Preston Riddikk; and Michael Hooper of Roots Revisited. Great food, too! $10 (includes food). Purchase tickets at door.

@Sankofa Alwayz did you hit up any Juneteenth events in the DMV this year?? 🥰

I wanted to hit up Moechella in DC as well as a drum circle at the arts center in Suitland earlier but I was spending time with the fam since it was Father’s Day and my stepdad wanted to have the day centered around him lol. We did hit up Georgia Brown’s in DC tho, it’s an upscale soul food restaurant. You could say it’s to DC what Red Rooster or Sylvia’s is to NYC.

Me and my friend did hit up Wasted Lounge on H St. the previous night for their Sip + Paint & hookah.
