Detroit — Police are investigating an incident in which celebrity judge Greg Mathis allegedly spit on a parking valet.
The alleged incident happened about 8 p.m. Friday outside a club on the 1700 block of St. Antoine, Detroit police Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood said. She declined to identify the suspect but a police source confirmed it was Mathis, who has starred in the courtroom show “Judge Mathis” since 1999.

“Preliminarily, we got a report that the victim was working valet parking at the time, when the suspect allegedly spit on him,” Kirkwood said. “Apparently, the suspect became upset over whether the victim had his car keys, so the suspect allegedly spit on him.”
Mathis, a Detroit native, is a former staffer for the late Detroit City Council member Clyde Cleveland and worked for the late Mayor Coleman Young. He was also close to the late Detroit City Councilwoman Brenda Scott.
After troubles with crime as a youth, Mathis turned his life around and became a lawyer and then a judge in 1995 for 36th District Court in Detroit. He considered but ultimately decided against running last year for the congressional seat formerly held by John Conyers.
