JR on why Shelton Benjamin was never World Champion

Brock never could talk either but he quickly won Randy Orton never had the best promos either.

Difference to me is that Shelton never had a character... like at all.

I don't think it's by chance that the only time he really ever got heat as a heel was when he had "Mama" with him. I know some of us didn't care for that, but she def. got him booed and he played the Mama's boy role well. It got heat for those couple months they were running it before Thea got sick. Outside of that, he's always been dope in the ring, but plain. With Lesnar, he's a big, intense, overly aggressive MF who looked like he could kill you. Orton isn't an outstanding promo but he had a character as an disrespectful, arrogant, borderline psychotic dude. Shelton was... Shelton Benjamin.

He was over before any of that horse shyt..like you didnt watch Raw in 2004 when fans voted him to face Jericho..like the big Shelton chants at WM 21...dudes be having amnesia when it comes to Shelton...even during the WGTT, he was getting alot of heat with that Tully Blanchard type shyt he was doing..

Blandy was dead in the water until Foley lost back to back to him. That was two years of him struggling. A long ic run no one cared for....lol.

I think a little bit of it was that he, like Carlito, really didn’t care to do the necessary politicking required to be world champion at that time. Look at RVD, the only reason he’s a world champion is because Vince wanted to use him to launch a brand with no fan resistance.

Shelton could've easily been pushed as a main eventer in 08-09 when he was "the gold standard". They finally gave him a character and he totally bought into it and sold it well. He was actually cutting some of the best promos of his career at that point.

But even if they didn't want him to talk they could've easily pushed him how TNA used lashley with his gold standard gimmick and I'm certain it would've been over. But nah let's keep pushing bland white wrestlers that talk even worse than Shelton. Cause that always works

Gold Standard Shelton was probably the most realistic version that could’ve been built to be a top champ. He didn’t cut many promos, but he seemed confident and direct. Plus that stuff he was doing where he’d fake sick and start coughing to get out of matches was but like a lot of interesting thing so they fall into they pulled the plug on it fast.

As bad as Shelton’s mic skills have been overall, they aren’t any better or worse than Jeff Hardy, pre-Broken Matt Hardy, Benoit, Brock, WWE RVD or pre-WWE AJ Styles. But that’s the unfortunate thing about black wrestlers, you really can’t have any flaws in order to get opportunities, meanwhile, white wrestlers can be loaded with red flags but the WWE will shine the biggest spotlight on whatever their strength is an 100% focus on that.
