Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Amazon are developing a Ku Klux Klan drama

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Amazon Studios are teaming up on K Troop, a drama about the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in the Reconstruction-era South and the Army regiment called upon to subdue the white supremacist group.

EW can confirm that Amazon has acquired feature film rights to the project, which is based on an upcoming Slate article by Matthew Pearl.

Gordon-Levitt is producing via his HitRecord Films banner and also eyeing the lead role of Maj. Lewis Merrill, leader of the titular troop that battled the KKK. No writer or director has been named for the film.

Gordon-Levitt will next be seen in Oliver Stone’sSnowden, another movie exploring politically fraught subject matter. His other upcoming projects include an untitled musical comedywith Channing Tatum, a Fraggle Rock movie, and an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman.

Amazon Studios has also been active of late, acquiring Woody Allen’s untitled next movie and several Sundance films.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news about K Troop.
