John Woo to return to Hollywood for a ‘Killer’ remake?

In a recent interview with Screen Daily, John Woo – the legendary Hong Kong action director behind A Better Tomorrow, Bullet in the Head and Hard Boiled – is aiming to direct an English-language remake of his 1989 film, The Killer.

“I still have a couple of projects developing in Hollywood, so after Manhunt, I probably will go back to Hollywood to make another action thriller. I’m going to make The Killer in an American version.”

The idea of remaking The Killer is nothing new. Back in 1992, director Walter Hill (48 Hrs) wrote a screenplay titled The Killer, based on Woo film. It was set to star Richard Gere and Denzel Washington. Due to scripting problems revolving around the main characters, the project was never realized.

Then in 2012, news started to circulate that The Killer would be remade in 3D by Korean filmmaker John H. Lee (The Cut Runs Deep) with Jung Woo-sun (The Good, the Bad, the Weird) attached as one of the leads. John Travolta, who previously collaborated with Woo on Broken Arrow and Face/Off, was “entertaining the possibility” of starring in the remake as well.

For now, Woo currently has his hands full with number of “ongoing” projects, including the aforementioned Manhunt (a remake of Jun’ya Sato’s 1976 film of the same name), Day of the Beast (a remake of Seijun Suzuki’s 1963 film Youth of the Beast), a possible untitled wuxia film with Tsui Hark, the WWII-themed Flying Tigers, and a remake of Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 film Le Samourai. At this time, Woo is filming his segment of Eight & a Half, an eight-part anthology film exploring the history of Hong Kong from the 1940s to present day.

It could work but I'd be optimistic if Woo's previous Hollywood works were legit. I'm one of the few here that liked some of his Hollywood shyt but I'm aware they border on trash status.

He did a really good movie called Once A Thief

And did a American version...I think it was suppose to be a pilot for a TV series. Watch the original.

If he does a American version of The Killer,I just hope among other things that the studio gives him a decent budget to work with.

Wasn't one of the reasons he stopped doin American flicks is because the studios made him water down his style (M.I.II Paycheck) ..Let's hope Lionsgate can do the distribution and they give John creative control sos we get another John Woo classic emotion, bullets, blood slow motion and all
