Forget about Omar Figueroa (24-0-1, 18KOs) ever fighting in the lightweight division.
Following last August's knockout of mandatory challenger Daniel Estrada, Figueroa revealed that he was likely moving up due to difficulties with making the 135-pound limit.
Figueroa's title was already removed from him by the WBC, and the vacant belt was captured last month by Jorge Linares.
Joel Diaz, who trains Figueroa, believes his fighter will not have a long stay at junior welterweight. He expects his stay to be brief, with a likely move to the welterweight limit.
"I don't think Omar will make 135 ever in his life. Omar will not make 135 again and I don't even think he'll make 140. Omar is going to be a fighter who will probably try 140, fight at 142 maybe, not making 140 and skipping 140 to 147," Diaz told BoxingScene.com.
Diaz feel confident that Figueroa will do very well at the welterweight limit.
"He'll do good [at 147] because of his power. That f***ing guy has so much power. That guy can hurt you with the slightest punch. I've never trained anybody in life who hits as hard as that guy," Diaz said.
"Omar Figueroa has knocked down and hurt kids ta the gym much heavier than him....kids at 147, 154...with 18 ounce gloves. And you hit him and you hit him and you hit him - and he smiles. He loves it. He's a different breed."
Figueroa is an action fighter. He is capable of boxing for twelve rounds, but he loves to slug it out and go to war. His instinct to slug has also caused several hand injuries and cuts in the ring.
"It's boring for him [to just box]. he's a great boxer. If I tell him to box they wont touch him, because he has that long reach and really good movement, but he says it's boring," Diaz said.
If Diaz had a choice to select Figueroa's next opponent, he had tasty option in mind - "Danny Garcia."
