Skill a lot of times matters more than most other things. Also The Bomber had lethal power in his right hand.

Fights seem way more aerobic back then too. Ref keeps them apart at all costs and it's constant work all round.

There's an argument that it's potentially a lot different as far as preparation and the energy systems they had to employ in a bout.
