Jobs report: Economy added 96K jobs in August

(AP) WASHINGTON - U.S. employers added 96,000 jobs last month, a weak figure that could slow any momentum President Barack Obama hoped to gain from his speech to the Democratic National Convention.

The unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent in July, but only because more people gave up looking for work. (400,000 people gave up looking for work in August, which is why the rate fell!) The government only counts people as unemployed if they are actively searching.

The Labor Department also says 41,000 fewer jobs were created in July and June than first estimated. The economy has added just 139,000 jobs a month since the beginning of the year, below 2011's average of 153,000.

The bleak report comes just two months before Election Day, and the economy is the top issue on most voters' minds.

Not after Team Romney and his Super PACs blanket those swing states with ads explaining it.

People don't realize how much money they're about to drop in those states.

:skip:

You mean the same ones that are leaving Michigan and Pennsylvania?

Just goes to show you, you can make all the speeches in the world and it won't get people hired.

I don't think Romney's money is going to matter. He didn't even get a bump after the RNC, that is three days of free advertisement. The establishment does not really like him. We saw it in the speeches. Every DNC speaker mentioned President Obama as a focal point, people like Christie mentioned Romney as an afterthought. The RNC ran from their past of President Bush and I expect Mittens will get handled real good on debate night.

It's not the end of the world that Romney has more money.

The incumbent has every other advantage.
