I just graduated with a BA in Philosophy and Religion. Not a great major. I wish I would've gone with economics, or minored in marketing or something else. I know my major isn't very useful.

I'm 27, and took a few years off school to work as an A&R in the music business, and I did some marketing and sales work for an MMA gear & equipment supply company, and some sales work for AT&T cellular.

Sorry for the long intro. My girlfriend works for the news here in Wilmington, NC, and she has a year left on her contract. Would it be smarter to work for a year until we move, or should I go for an internship, since my major sucks? I figured an internship would help get my foot in the marketing/sales door better.

Wilmington NC sucks for jobs BTW unless you want to be in the restaurant or movie business.

Thanks for any help!

You should try to get an entry level job in sales or marketing. Sounds like you have some marketing experience already. You have to create a resume that highlights those experiences. That should give you a slight edge over the 22 year old newbies with no experience. Also if you get an interview, highlight how your degree in philosophy(logic, critical thinking etc.) will be an asset.

Probably a job, if it's a decent one, since it'll actually pay.

I'd only go with an internship if it's with a really good company that will give you great work experience, or if the only jobs you can find aren't about shyt (ie. waiter, retail, etc.).

Sounds like you have everything you need. Pad the hell out your resume and shoot for an entry level job like Robbie said. You're past that "getting job experience" part of getting a job.

Thanks a lot! This is good advice and falls in line with what I was thinking.

I have a standing offer at Nissan selling cars, which I'm thinking I might honestly do if nothing pans out in the next week or two. One of my best friends is the head of the finance department too. The only thing is I'm real into training MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and car lot hours are long, but I know I need the experience and more importantly, it's good money if you hustle hard.

Thanks for pointing out to highlight the degree. A lot of people don't know what it really means and they think you just sit around and talk about hit, which kind of is true, but as you mentioned I've learned a lot about how to teach myself new skills bu using logic and being analytical.

Makes me feel better reading this. Thanks man.

Thanks! Yea I mean I would like to open a gym for MMA and martial arts, and I have a couple little online websites for selling watches, etc, that don't really make much money. I'd like to start a business or company, but I need money first and I'd like to ride this recession out, however long it takes.

I think internships are probably the best thing right now long as you get in with a good company.

Since your about to move...go for the job.Moving expenses are expensive. Yes a internship sounds good, but guess what it pays but its not paying in $$$. Right now you need the $$$. Either way you are in a good spot.

People were surprised I guess. A lot of the people in there actually weren't going to law school actually. Really surprised me too. I'm confident because I've had some job experience, and I do very well in job interviews. As long as I don't have to do it all online and I can talk to someone face-to-face I'm usually good. I just wanted a piece of paper saying I finished four years. I got on pain meds pretty bad while I was out of school, and it became a goal just to clean up and finish, like I wanted to go back and finish what I started really badly.

Law school is still an option. I'm good at arguing, but I always tell people that arguing in a court room is like 4% of being a lawyer, and most of it is reading/studying/paperwork. I could be wrong on that though.

The option is open, but I'd have to get student loans, and right now I don't have any.

Believe it or not philosophy wasn't on the Time Magazine's 10 worst majors list. I thought it would be. I think architecture may have actually been number one, or art history. Philosophy was 16 or 17th worst, I think. They measured it by number of people unemployed with that major.
