A leading member of a Hungarian nationalist party has drawn strong criticism from the government for saying officials of Jewish origin presented a potential “security risk” to the country.

Jobbik political party leader Gyongyosi holds a news conference in Budapest. The slogan "Just the nation!" is displayed on the podium.
Marton Gyongyosi, a member of parliament and deputy head of the far-right Jobbik party, said during a discussion of the Gaza conflict that it was time to “assess how many MPs and government members are of Jewish origin and who presents a national security risk to Hungary," the BBC reported.

The Hungarian government has condemned Gyongyosi’s comments, with a spokesman saying Tuesday that it was taking "the strictest possible action against every form of racism and anti-Semitic behavior," adding that it was doing "everything in order to ensure that malicious voices incompatible with European norms are driven back," according to the BBC.

Gyongyosi responded to the criticism, saying that his comments only applied to people with dual Israeli citizenship.

"Jobbik believes that the national security risk assessment ... is important exclusively in the case of dual citizens," Gyongyosi said in written statement, the Associated Press reported. "I apologize to our Jewish compatriots for my equivocal statement."

He then added: "Hungary should not be afraid of Jobbik but of Zionist Israel and those serving it also from here."

Jobbik, which holds 47 out of 386 in parliament -- the third largest faction -- has been labeled fascist, xenophobic, anti-Semitic, racist and homophobic by its opponents, which the party has denied.

Gyongyosi has criticized the government’s support of Israel, most recently highlighted by Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Jobbik supporters are known for displaying insignia used by fascists aligned with Nazi Germany during World War II. Hungary’s pre-war Jewish population was around 825,000. The government passed successively harsher anti-Semitic measures in the 1930s and '40s and deported some 550,000 of its Jewish citizens to the gas chambers of Auschwitz in 1944, according to Humanitas International.

The current Jewish population in Hungary is estimated at around 100,000, about 1 percent of the total.

Gusztav Zoltai, a Holocaust survivor and prominent leader in Hungary’s Jewish community, expressed dismay at Gyongyosi’s comments, but told the AP that was encouraged by support from most Hungarian citizens.

"Much of the country is made up of decent people who protest together with us against these things," Zoltai said.

Jobbik, however, has gained wider support, growing from zero seats in parliament in the 2006 election to 47 in 2010.

I have a hungarian friend who sent me the link to that story the other day, those guys are out of control...situation seems to be very tense over there with the extreme-right...plus what this article doesn't say is that the "criticism" these comments drew from the govt came very late and were quite tame (basically, the same stuff they say every time Jobbik is blatantly racist).
These guys actually expelled one of their own when it was discovered that he had jewish ancestors :pachaha:

"We will never forgive Europe's Christians for slaughtering millions of our children, women and elderly… not just in the recent Holocaust, but throughout the generations, in a consistent manner which characterizes all factions of hypocritical Christianity."
"And now, Europe is losing its identity in favor of another people and another religion, and there will be no remnants and survivors from the impurity of Christianity, which shed a lot of blood it won't be able to atone for."
He added, however, that Jews must pray that the Islamization of most of Europe will not harm the people of Israel.

However, most Jews will never openly state their hatred for Christianity nor their hatred for White Gentiles. It is important to understand that Europe's historical persecution of Jews was largely retaliatory in nature. Through the centuries, Jews would settle in some area of Europe and typically meddle with the local customs and trade practices (in many cases subvert or pervert them). The native Europeans of [fill in the blank] European nation would become justifiably angry and thus retaliate. Jews would then typically be evicted from whichever European nation where they were troublemakers. Jews have been thrown out of more than 150 nations during the past 1,000 years alone:ahh:

Is there EU membership status still in jeopardy?

You're talking about Hungary? They're in, and it would take a LOT more than extreme-right parties saying what extreme-right parties say to get them out. No EU Member State has ever been expelled.

I'll have to think about what happened exactly but the right wanted to throw their constitution in the bushes and stop making payment to the EU on Hungarys debts.
They also closed down opposition news outlets and arrested journalists.

Oh yeah the constitution thing got sorted out earlier this year I think, Hungary basically had to back down some in front of EU pressure. It had something to do with freedom of speech and of the press if I remember well.

I don't buy that right-wing rethoric about stopping payment to the EU (as a member state you pay general taxes to the EU as a whole, not to this or that particular body) because that would effectively mean they drop out of the EU. One country can't just say "oh we're not paying this year", the ties between the EU and the member states do not depend on this or that government, but it is the country in itself that is part of the EU: they would have to decide to get out of the EU before being able to stop paying. And remember that they are, as every other MS, getting money from the EU, so the EU could just suspend those payments if shyt gets too hectic (I think they did it with Austria at some point when Haider was in office, but not sure). As long as they're in, contributions are decided collectively during annual negotiations, hell even Great-Britain which is very eurosceptic plays by the rules. And anyway I'm almost 100 % sure Hungary is getting more out of the EU than what it is contributing to it thanks to the structural funds, so as often I think this is just some right-wing electoral posturing devoid of any depth.

There are a lot of factors here, but accusing them of 'meddling' as if they were outsiders is not factual. Jews were actually invited by various kingdoms and communities specifically in order to stimulate the economy. In addition, in the medieval and post-medieval period, they were actually relegated to jobs dealing with money for religious reasons. The picture you're painting of an invasive, subversive population has its origins in pure revisionist antisemitic propaganda from the mid-1800s.

As for modern Jews, you're off the mark here, too. I grew up in NYC. Many of my close friends are Jewish. I've dated Jewish girls. I even went to a JCC (Jewish Community Center) for preschool and K, along with other non-Jewish Black, Latino, Asian, and white kids. I have never encountered the kind of mass crypto-racism you describe- it just doesn't exist.
