Jerry Seinfeld Inks Massive Netflix Deal

Jerry Seinfeld will bring his web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee to Netflix as part of a larger deal with the streaming site, Deadline reports.

Margaret Cho, James Gaffigan to appear next season

Seinfeld will create two new stand-up specials for Netflix, with the first expected to arrive this year. He will also develop scripted and non-scripted series for the website. Meanwhile, Comedians in Cars will arrive on Netflix with 24 new episodes in late 2017, along with the show's entire back catalog. More episodes are expected to follow in 2018 and beyond.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee premiered in 2012 on Sony's Crackle platform and recently kicked off its ninth season. As the blunt title suggests, episodes feature Seinfeld conducting lengthy interviews with performers in a classic car and over a cup of coffee. Past guests include Larry David, Chris Rock, Tina Fey, Jon Stewart, Amy Schumer and even Barack Obama (as Seinfeld joked in that episode, the President has "gotten off just enough funny lines to qualify for getting on this show").

As for the other aspects of Seinfeld's Netflix deal, the comedian has notably not released a stand-up special since 1998's I'm Telling You For The Last Time, despite touring and performing constantly. In 2002, he delved into the art and mechanics of comedy in the documentary, Comedian, while in 2011 he launched a website collecting a vast archive of past routines.

Seinfeld's agreement with Netflix comes as the streaming giant continues to pad its already impressive comedy lineup. Last year, Chris Rock announced a deal for two new stand-up specials – his first since 2008 – while Dave Chappelle also partnered with Netflix for three specials, including one original set and two never-aired performances from Austin City Limits and the Hollywood Palladium.

Netfix is spending ridiculous amounts of money on stand up. What's the end goal?

Stand up ages well.

And, comedians are a good source of comedy. Invest in a comedian (and his/her special), so if he ever has an idea, where do you think the first place he'll go to pitch it is?

I'm sure there's a "First Look" aspect to the deals these dudes are signing, ie. "If you have an idea for a flick or show, we have to pass on it before you take it anywhere else"

Netflix be be throwing OD Bread at these comedic legends to bring them over.

Networks can't really compete with them cause they have unlimited money and don't have to worry about ratings.

I'm curious to see the next five years for the company.

Networks can compete. They just choose to continuously make the same white bread shyt over and over again with the same actors in different places. Networks are all about appeasing 60 year old grandparents and basic ass folks with families and christian sensibilities. ABC/CBS/NBC make more money than FXX does, but look at the difference in quality programming. The movie industry works the same way and that's why they losing too. Netflix/FXX let the people who are good at the shyt go rock and be good at the shyt without stepping in and trying to make it palatable.
