Chavez: I'll Only Fight Golovkin Without an Extension
By Salvador Rodriguez
Former WBC middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. says he is ready to face Gennady Golovkin on July 19 at the Forum in Inglewood, California - but only without a promotional contract extension.
According to Chavez, Top Rank will only finalize the fight if he agrees to a three fight extension of their promotional agreement. The Mexican star's contract with Top Rank is running out and he wants to become a promotional free agent.
Chavez claims there are "issues" with his current contract, but he wouldn't reveal what those issues are.
"What's going on is they want a contract extension and I will not extend anything. I'm ready to sign for the fight, but then I want to be a free agent. I'll fight him but without any extensions. I just want fair treatment," Chavez said via telephone.
"I am also very surprised that [Top Rank CEO] Bob Arum has empowered people in Mexico to approach my dad, my family - trying to convince me to sign the extension. This won't work and I believe that is unprofessional. I just want a fair deal, don't send emissaries trying to convince me."
"There have been other fighters who they are guaranteeing a lot more money than me. I just want a fair deal. I will not sue like Mikey Garcia did, I just want to do the right thing for them and for me."
