Then an article popped up about South Carolina compliance looking into it...

The University of South Carolina's athletic department is looking into whether star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been in contact with agent JAY Z.

Such contact could constitute an NCAA violation, which could jeopardize Clowney's eligibility with the Gamecocks, depending on the circumstances of the contact. NCAA rules prohibit players accepting cash or things of value from agents before their eligibility has expired.

South Carolina Assistant Director of Athletics for Media Relations Steve Fink confirmed that the matter is being checked out by the Gamecocks' compliance office, calling it "standard operating procedure" in an email to NFL Draft 365. Compliance officers are charged with making sure coaches and players are cognizant of NCAA rules, and investigating any potential violations.

Jay-Z has not been certified as a NFL agent yet. So would he be violating the runner rule?

Jay has been certified by the NBA and MLB apparently.

As long as they didn't come to any agreement or pay for any of his expenses during the meetings, he should be okay:

It is not a violation of NCAA rules if a student-athlete merely talks to an agent (as long as an agreement for agent representation is not established) or socializes with an agent. For example, a student-athlete could go to dinner with an agent and no NCAA violations would result if the student-athlete provided his own transportation and paid for his meal.

I would hope Jay-Z's reps know how to go after these top players without jeopardizing their college season.
