Jay-Z biting or paying homage? What's the difference?

BIG entered conversation when Jay was still a C-lister and has remained there ever since. Jay has nothing to do with BIG's standing in that conversation
It don’t matter what he was in 1996. It’s 2022 and he at the top of the food chain. And after every level he climbed he kept ringing off biggie name

I remember back on thisis50 forums somebody posted a list of lyrics Camel took from other rappers and it had like 200 lines on it :francis:
But apparently his stans think it's a homage. Lol. Imagine stand up comedians stealing entire jokes from others and calling it a homage.

What does Jay-z stand to gain by reciting an old, madd recognizable Biggie lyric? Really think about that.

First of all, he knows that people know it's a Biggie lyric, lol. Second off, do you really think he couldn't have just scrapped saying the lyric and came up with his own?

Biting is blatantly taking someone else's style/material and presenting it like it's yours. Paying homage is more like tipping the hat (pause), like a shoutout/callback to something everyone recognizes in a respectful type of way. "When the Remy's in the system / aint no tellin will I fukk em, will i diss em...", it sounds good of course, lol, but he knows that we all know where it's from...biting is something else.
Jay wasn’t biting….but he definitely used big lines for filler and vibe/direction and he over did it…. But Jay doesn’t NEED to bite

Paying homage is when your target audience gets the reference

Biting is when they don't (and when you're not doing anything to get them to recognize the reference)

Tbh, biggie is so GOATed that many artists have bit his lyrics.

Paying homage is when your target audience gets the reference

Biting is when they don't (and when you're not doing anything to get them to recognize the reference)

Jay was biting and used it as tool to gain more clout as Biggies man.

At the time he was beefing cam and the audio dropped we was all deducting points from jigga.

Snoop lodi da di is a good debate. Idk if he was biting Rick

I look at it like sampling. Everything comes from somewhere else. Most of the best hip hop is either sampled or interpolated from older shyt. That includes beats and lyrics. Most of your favorite hooks are a re work of some older song. When Jay uses Big lines and shyt like that, most people know where that came from. People clown him for it (especially back in the day) because of Nas’s line in Ether.

HOWEVER I do absolutely believe he bit Young Chris heavy and I’m not sure why because his flow was better before:scusthov:
