What does Jay-z stand to gain by reciting an old, madd recognizable Biggie lyric? Really think about that.
First of all, he knows that people know it's a Biggie lyric, lol. Second off, do you really think he couldn't have just scrapped saying the lyric and came up with his own?
Biting is blatantly taking someone else's style/material and presenting it like it's yours. Paying homage is more like tipping the hat (pause), like a shoutout/callback to something everyone recognizes in a respectful type of way. "When the Remy's in the system / aint no tellin will I fukk em, will i diss em...", it sounds good of course, lol, but he knows that we all know where it's from...biting is something else.

A lot of greats have blatantly used rappers' that predate them's flows and voices and actual lyrics, etc... for entire songs almost...when shyt is clearly obvious what's being done it's not biting to me, it's homage. That's me tho.
On the flip, someone like Action Bronson...and I'm a Bronson fan for real, I fux with him heavy...the way he was purposely trying to sound vocally, and even the delivery, was straight biting. That wasn't homage, he made a whole career out of sounding exactly like Ghost. You know he intentionally bit his style too because on his new shyt he doesn't sound like him as much anymore...voice is wild different. Same with the dude who sounds just like Jay-z, I don't know his name...that's biting.

and that's why folks started the whole "biting" insert. And Jay was doing it on big records too which means "homage" was not the focal point.

As more artists should, right now be pulling from past generations, styles, legendary artists and keeping their legacy alive and in circulation, that's the only real way we survive.
