All over an eviction notice.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
A Jacksonville man is dead after two police officers shot at him during a confrontation on the Westside.

But the man's relatives -- and their attorney -- are raising questions about what happened.

“The family is very upset. They want answers and they want them now, but they also want calm,” attorney Eric Block said. “They want everybody to behave themselves. They want everybody to let the truth come out.”

The two officers involved -- 25-year Jacksonville Sheriff's Office veteran Steve Srozinski and 24-year JSO veteran Troy Blum -- are on administrative leave while JSO investigates the shooting, which happened just after 10 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment complex on the corner of Blanding Boulevard and Du-Clay Road.

Police identified the man as 28-year-old D'Angelo Stallworth whose family said was a father of three and a supervisor at UPS. The attorney said Stallworth was visiting his children and girlfriend when he was shot.

JSO Director Tom Hackney said Srozinski and Blum, who are part of JSO's civil process unit, were at the Planters Walk apartments to make sure that an eviction notice posted earlier had been carried out. He said they went into the apartment in question with two maintenance workers and found it empty and clean but one of the officers noticed a man outside on a shared balcony.

On each end of the shared balcony are laundry rooms, and the laundry room for the neighboring apartment was open with a comforter on the floor outside the laundry room, Hackney said.

One of the officers went out to question the man, Hackney said, and the man reached down, threw back the comforter, picked up a handgun and then drove it into the chest of the officer but didn't fire. The officer yelled that there was a gun, and the second officer came out to help, Hackney said.

The officers struggled with the man over the gun. He was able to break free and run down the stairs, but when he got toward the bottom of the steps, he turned back toward the officers, Hackney said.

According to Hackney, the officers did not know the gun had been dropped and were in fear for their safety and the safety of the maintenance workers.

“Both officers, fearing that the firearm was going to be used against them, fired their guns,” Hackney said.

One officer fired twice and the other fired four times, Hackney said. It's unclear which officer's shot hit the man or how many times he was shot. He ran a few feet, collapsed and died, Hackney said.

After investigating, detectives believe the man dropped the gun at the top of the stairs as he ran away, so it appears he was unarmed when he was shot.

There's a lot of tension right now between the man's family and police. Some of his relatives said they believe he was unjustly killed.

“It's a horrible thing,” Block said. “I promise you we are going to get to the truth. And we are not stupid. This is a political hot topic: young, unarmed, at least he was unarmed at the time he was shot six times. It's debatable if he was ever armed or not. We will get to the bottom of that.”

But investigators said the man put their officers in danger, and they had to protect themselves. They also said after investigating the scene that they found two containers of marijuana packaged for sale under the comforter where the man had the gun.

Man was minding his own business

Following this...

We're the officers in uniform?

What reason would the man have to just pull a pistol and place it in the man's chest?

Exactly. I just left a vigil for dude. He worked at ups and had 3 kids he wasnt that type of cat.
It just don't make any sense. I mean really who waits on the popo to pop up then pull a gun on them? Don't nobody pull on the police unless their back is against the wall last resort type deal

So a gainfully employed father of 3 out visiting his girlfriend just up and decided to throw all of that away that he has going in his life, and pulls out a gun and shoves into an officer's chest? :duck:

Then he runs away, only to get to the bottom of the stairs and stop, turn back around, and point the gun at the two policemen? :duck:

"Insult to our intelligence" is an understatement at this point :snoop:

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- New questions have come to light after the family of the man shot and killed by two JSO officers Tuesday says he suffered from a serious physical illness.

Officers say they shot D'Angelo Stallworth because he was holding a gun and wrestled with police. However, family and friends tell FCN that Stallworth was too weak to hold a gun after his recent diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis.

Angela Mack is Stallworth's mother. She says her son couldn't open a bottle of milk or orange juice due to his MS.

"He was getting frustrated that he couldn't hold anything so then the doctor's diagnosed him with MS," said Mack. "He had such a big heart."

Stallworth was a father of three and a supervisor at UPS for eleven years.

"It just breaks my heart that he's not here. He was such a kind person."

Family and friends gathered in the exact spot where Stallworth was killed. They placed a rose in the exact spot where Stallworth's body was lying after he was shot at least six times.

The family's attorney Eric Block standing with the family.

"You are not getting all of the story. You are not getting all of the witness statements. You are not getting all of the evidence that is known," said Block.

According to JSO, Tuesday morning two officers came here to the Planters Apartments for an eviction. However, it turned deadly, after officers say Stallworth grabbed a gun from under this comforter and shoved it against the chest of an officer later wrestling with him.

The officers say Stallworth ran and that's when police started shooting. The officers say they feared for their lives and the lives of other in the area during the incidient.

Stallworth's co-worker Eboni Montgomery says she noticed his hands were weak.

"We was joking one time and I was like 'hey D, I can't read your writing. He was like hey, I have problems with my hand and it's hard for me to write.' So, it was kind of hard when the story came out that he scuffled with the gun," said Montgomery.

Now, the family and their attorney say they want facts.

"I just want the truth," said Mack.

As for the gun, Police say the chamber was empty but the magazine was full. The two officers in this case have a combined experience of more than 50 years on the force and are now on on paid administrative leave, standard protocol. For both officers, this is their first-police involved shooting.

Btw I live in Jax and unarmed black men had been getting killed left and right here about 2-5 years ago. Like all the time. They weren't on video and this was before Michael Brown and Eric Garner and all that made headlines so the stories never made it past local.

In 2008, Jacksonville had 28 police shootings.

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The NAACP will hold a news conference Wednesday morning to discuss the 28 police shootings and ask the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office for a citizen review panel.

The President of the Florida State Conference of the NAACP will be in Jacksonville on Wednesday to meet with local officials to propose that an outside agency review all police-involved shootings.

According to local chapter President Isaiah Rumlin, "The pattern of shootings have been particulary disturbing. The NAACP has been a longtime advocate for an outside agency review of police shootings and for the formation of a civilian review panel."

State NAACP President Adora Nweze will speak at the Beaver Street Enterprise Center at 9 a.m., located at 1225 W. Beaver Street, just west of I-95.

Rumlin goes on to say, "In the history of Jacksonville, no police shooting have ever been considered unjustified."

Rumlin also cites the number of African Americans who were shot and the number of deaths resulting from police shootings.

Later both Rumlin and Nweze will meet with local leaders and government officials.
