J.K. ROWLING RELEASES NEW HARRY POTTER SHORT STORY
More to come?
8 JUL 2014 BY LUKE KARMALI
J.K. Rowling has released a new Harry Potter short story, revealing some of the details about what happened to Harry, Ron and Hermione in the years following the books' climax.
Accessing the story requires a Pottermore account and, while a brief overview can be read below, head over there now for all the information from the original piece, which is written in the style of a Daily Prophet article by Rita Skeeter.
The article covers a glimpse of the famous trio by the press at this year's Quidditch World Cup, where a 34-year-old Harry is described as having "threads of silver" in his hair, as well as a new scar on his right cheekbone to match his infamous lightning bolt. While his children James and Albus are present, however, wife Ginny is not, leading Rita to speculate there could be trouble in paradise.
For those not aware, Rowling has always been deeply critical of Britain's tabloid media, electing to appear at the recent Levenson inquiry into press standards. The fact Ginny isn't present, therefore, and the suppositions drawn from that are likely to be a veiled critique of a malicious press, rather than actual narrative fact.
Elsewhere Viktor Krum makes an appearance, with Harry greeting him with a hug, while Hermione and Ron remain happily married. Since we last caught up with them, it transpires Ron has changed career; though initially starting out as an Auror like Harry, after two years Ron elected to leave the Ministry and instead stepped into the position of co-manager at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. Hermione, meanwhile, has ascended to the lofty heights of head of the Department for Magical Law Enforcement, with mutterings that her meteoric rise shows no signs of slowing.
Neville Longbottom remains professor of Herbology at Hogwarts, and is married to Hannah, while Luna Lovegood is married to Newt Scamander’s grandson, Rolf, with whom she has twin boys. Bill Weasley remains married to Fleur, despite the inevitable difficulties of his affliction. Teddy Lupin, Harry's 16-year-old godson, meanwhile, is still carrying on with their daughter Victoire.
Rowling has always insisted she never had any plans to revisit Harry's story as an adult, though perhaps this tantalising taster suggests she may be considering changing her mind? Whatever the case, the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them draws ever closer so, if this has whet your whistle for more of this magical world, you hopefully won't have long to wait.
