Any posters here go to or went to a IVY league school? How are you treated there and what's the African American community like? I'm planning on studying Computer Science at Duke, UPenn, Cornell, etc. However, I can wait till grad school for a school that has a strong program but a wack social scene. The people I've talked to have told me that Duke and UPenn have the balance that I'm looking for. Some people told me to avoid Cornell and many others. I live on the East Coast and I'm trying to stay relatively close to New York. For the past four years I've been the only black dude in my classes filled with snobby Jewish and white kids, I don't want to go to college that's always like that. Any advice brehs?

Just apply to the top schools that have a balance, whether they're ivy-league or ivy-league caliber. Graduate school is whatever, but you should enjoy undergrad. But to be realistic, every top school is liked you described, it's just that some will have other communities within that. Usually, the larger the school, the better the opportunity to find your own niche.

In truth, the Ivy League populace is mainly the same people you went to high school with. I'd research potential schools' African American matriculation percentage and then subtract some percentages from that to get the real answer as to how many blacks will be in your classes. It won't be that many either way but you might get a few extra bodies if you do the research and choose based on the information. Also get involved in some black frat and events.

I go to school at MIT

there is a pretty strong black community here that's really tight. There are none of the black fraternities (like Alpha Phi Alpha) but there is an all-black male living group here that i have some friends in; they throw some pretty big parties.

Throw in the fact that there are a bunch of colleges in Boston (Harvard, Boston University, Tufts, etc.) with black communities and I'd say it's pretty easy to find what I think you are looking for.

But as for social scene in general, MIT has a surprisingly strong one, all the fraternities throw parties. I am in one myself and it's not impossible to get into one of our parties if you know someone/have a few chicks with you :manny:

People from BU, Wellesly, Northeastern, etc. often come to MIT fraternity parties.

if this is your issue, dont go to college/try to run in upper (middle) class circles. Thats america for you unfortunately. I got homies at ivy's and other top teirs and there are black communites, but if you're looking for some ridiculous diversity go to a large public school. Watch out though cuz they give you 0 help there.
