Currently in the process of reverting but I’ve got some issues to overcome.

Have felt a need for spirituality in my life and Islam feels like the right path.

I love the discipline and genuine desire to improve

I feel comfortable asking Coli brehs and trust your opinions.

I’m having issues with the spiritual aspect, I don’t really fear Jahannam nor am I motivated by the fear of it. I guess this will come with time.

I’m not really big on the whole Niqab thing, Hijabs are cool I guess but I don’t really mind :yeshrug:

I’m also hearing music is haram and I don’t get dating :mjcry:

I appreciate any advice/experiences anyone might have for ya boy.

I'll attempt to answer your questions as best as possible insha Allah, just send me a private message if you want further elaborations bro. I have no problems helping you as much as I can, although I'm far from perfect myself.

Islam is a simple religion breh, but there are many layers to it. It's like a vast ocean. But at it's core, the purpose of this religion is to purify the hearts of mankind so that they are fit for the Divine presence in the afterlife. Allah says in the Quran through the tongue of Abraham:

"And let me not be in disgrace on the Day when (men) will be raised up;-

The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail,

But only he (will prosper) that brings to Allah a sound heart;"

How does one get a sound heart? Through the process of spiritual purification.

The spiritual aspect of Islam is not really about "fearing" jahannam as it is about establishing a connection with the Divine. That's the most important thing. This is what's called "Taqwa" or "God-consciousness". Taqwa is achieved through many practices that combine your internal and external states. So for example prayer.

Prayer has a physical aspect which is the actual movements of the limbs, the words that you speak etc. But it also has a spiritual component which requires you to be in a state of humility before God, to be in a balanced state between fear and hope, and to be focused. These practices are not just empty rituals breh, if done properly they have an impact on your soul that you cannot explain. You'll feel more at ease, more clear about your purpose, you'll feel a great amount of certainty and you will unshakable when faced with calamities in this world. Islam is a perfect link between the spiritual and the physical.

Jahannam is a reality and is a manifestation of God's attribute of wrath, Jannah is a manifestation of God's attribute of Compassion and Mercy. If you focus too much on God's punishment, you will fall into despair.

If you focus too much on His Mercy, you will become complacent and delusional, thinking that you can do anything you want because "God is merciful". Many Muslims fall into this trap by over focusing on this one attribute of Mercy and forgetting that God has many other attributes. God is merciful, loving, compassionate, but He is also Just, Wise, Quick to take account etc.

Ideally you should be somewhere in between hope and fear, far from either extreme.

But I would tell you this, forget everything about music, hijab, niqab etc and for now just focus on learning about God and about your own self and how that relates to God. Right now it's shaytaan creating all of these doubts in your head to make you postpone taking that initial step. Death could come at any moment breh. Don't postpone taking the shahadah. You'd rather die a sinful Muslim who at least acknowledges God, than someone who knew the truth but just never took that last step.

If you have time listen to this lecture series, the sheikh explains purification of the heart very well:

Like I said, hit me up if you want to talk through Pm's bro.

Also, never forget what this is all about. It's about you and your relationship with God. Never forget that. It's the first thing that many people forget when they come to the Deen. They come to the Deen because their hearts recognize it as the truth and they feel comfortable with it, but then they lose themselves in all the sectarian squabbles, all the controversial issues etc.. Then they forget about Allah. And as Allah says in the Quran:

"And be not like those who forgot Allah , so He made them forget their own selves. Those are the defiantly disobedient."

20:124 But as for him who shall turn away from remembering Me - his shall be a life of narrow scope [109] and on the Day of Resurrection We shall raise him up blind."

Sincerely ask Allah to guide you at all times and in all states even if you are sinning. Never allow shaytaan to make you feel too sinful to repent or even ask for guidance. Put your reliance and trust on Him and try to be sincere in your heart. He will guide you.

@Karbaash Thank you for your advice breh,I’ve respected you as a poster for a long time so it means a lot :salute:

I guess I’m just kinda scared, it’s a big decision to make after 18 years of not following the deen and I want to be serious and respectful.

It’s also a brand new culture, language, diet and way of life that is new to me so it’s kinda daunting.

However, I follow in the steps of great Black men like Ali and Malcolm.

I also need to do a lot of reading so I can defend my choice when necessary and not appear ignorant

I will pm you at some point in the upcoming week once my Shahadah plans are finalised.

Your good deeds will not go unnoticed brother, blessings onto you and yours:salute:

You will still be the same person after shahadah. You don't even have to change your name. Islam will not change the essence of who you are breh, it will just refine you and bring out what's already in you. Your fitrah. You'll just add a new dimension to your being. The connection with Allah.

All that other stuff is a smokescreen by shaytaan to confuse you and disorient you bro. If you feel in your heart that it's right, then say the shahadah and take baby steps from there.

I'm not trying to push you, I just want to challenge you on some of the worries that you have, so you can realize that they are unnecessary. It's just noise Breh. What remains is you and your connection with Allah.

Masha Allah brother. Beautifully eloquent and straight. May Allah reward you.

As for OP know that Islam is one of the only religion where you singularly will be held responsible for your own conduct and action. If you have any questions PM me or Karbash.
