At their inceptions, AJPW was more narrative-based with ongoing storylines, closer to mordern American professional wrestling, whereas NJPW's selling point was the more realistic "strongstyle" in-ring competition. I'll let somebody else go into more detail
As I got into wrestling in the early 90s it became evident over time that in the major wrestling countries there was always two feds competing: WWF and WCW in the States, AJPW and NJPW in Japan of course, and CMLL and AAA in Mexico. It’s simple and logical yet that fascinated me.
Anoki wanted shoot fights in NJPW which is why it failed in the 90s, tried hard as fukk again in the 2000s and it still was trash, lets thank Tanahashi for changing the game
