"Mass education was designed to turn independent farmers into docile, passive tools of production. That was its primary purpose. And don't think people didn't know it. They knew it and they fought against it." - Noam Chomsky

Is the purpose of mass education social upliftment, or rather, social control? To explore this question, we were joined by James Corbett of the Corbett Report, marking his third appearance on the Smells Like Human Spirit Podcast (previously here and here). This was a fantastic episode which will be sure to get a lot of you thinking, so we would love to hear your feedback via e-mail at smellslikehumanspirit@gmail.com. Check it out, tell your friends, and peace!

I look at the environment I grew up in and saw formalized education as a means to suboridinate and control young people and guide their fate toward menial labor. For example, when I was a senior in high school I hit all my requirements and wanted to take Office Aid which gave you credit for doing your homework and helping around the school office.

Most kids just do it in their house offices (4 houses in my school). But for some reason I noticed a lot of black and hispanic kids were not sent to their house offices to do paper pushing, but sent to work with janitors. They put me there as well. I could not understand it nor could I articulate it at the time, but it just didn't feel right to see my people sent to the basements of the school to get dirty and greasy while not getting paid for this labor.

I fought hard and got placed in my house office, but I knew that they were preparing us for what our lives were 'supposed' to be. Of course, my guidance counselor, who placed me with the janitors, never bothered to check my record and notice that I was a straight A student. Jerks.

Anyways, back to the main point, I believe that formalized education (public/private schools k-12 & college)is a means of control, while informal education (self-taught, street smarts, and experience) is a means to break that control and have some sort of power over whether control is exerted upon you. I think both are vital and necessary.

Organized education like religion is nothing but a way to control and socialize people from the time they are least resistive...

the higher your education, the less likely you are to be arrested for any crime. people with phd's have extremely low arrest rates. being educated has MANY other benefits, but at the same time indoctrination and propaganda are dangerous weapons. it's a double-edged sword, i think the key is teaching kids to think for themselves. dont just believe something without evidence because youre told to (ahem).

basically a rationalist approach should save you from the majority of indoctrination and bullshyt we are taught.

imo, it's a tool of social control early on (from kindergarten to the HS). I think it can become more socially uplifting as we enter post-secondary school (college or university) when there is more choice and options as to what to study.

the first thing i thought when I saw that quote... when we turned from hunter gatherers into 'agricultural societies' mass economic disadvantage has always been in play
