I have a friend in aviation engineering that had me when he told me this. I guess all the major airlines (United, American, Delta) service their planes in other countries. Places like China are vastly unregulated as far as safety/efficiency of the service being performed by only god knows who. An Al-Queda plan thwarted, which included those who were employed by the outsourced company of these American airline companies. This bust was very much kept under wraps to not uncover the lack of public awareness of these facts.
The jist of plane safety is they have multiple backups in place for failures that take place. The plane servicing done may or may not be up to standards, but it is very hard to gauge given the backups that currently exist. I guess it may take a horrible incident for people to realize the lack of regulation with these airlines that are trying to save a buck.
