Ok, here's the situation:

One of the owners of the job I work at sent out an email saying that anyone who makes a mistake that costs the company money is going to have to pay for 50% of it with their paycheck.

I looked around and got mixed answers as to whether or not this is legal. It damn sure sounds like some bullshyt.

Can anyone give me a definite answer?

I work in Jersey, by the way.

Edit: I posted this in the wrong forum. Mods, can you move this to the Locker Room?

You might want to check with an employment attorney discreetly. New Jersey is at will employment. An at-will employee is a person who can be hired and fired at will. This means that they can be fired at any time and for any reason or for no reason at all. It can be for a good reason, such as for failure to show up at work on time or for a bad reason, such as your boss does not like you. There are two main exceptions to this rule: (1) that they can not be fired for an illegal reason or (2) if the company expressly limits the manner in which it will fire its employees.

You should also look for another job, some companies welcome constructive mistakes (as long as you learn from menial mistakes)

In this economy, 50% might be better than 0%, but keep looking.

No, it isn't legal. Employers, not employees, bear all the costs of doing business. The most they can do is suspend or terminate your employment unless the mistake costs the company an egregious amount of money/time. In that case, you could also be sued.

As long as no money went into your pocket ur OK. Be sure to make down time/date/amount... of every lost. Write down everyone who lost money... so that if u are ever fired for it... u will have prove that that's what happened to you, and you were treated differently.

As funkdoc said this sounds mad illegal. Businesses already factor in mistakes as a cost of doing business and they have budget projections based on a ton of different things before the year even begins so they know how much money they will likely need to pay for the "mistakes".

i'm pretty sure this is a state issue. i'd contact the labor board. az is at will work as well. look for another job, in the meantime write down the shyt they take from you. later when you find that other job start looking into legal action....if it's possible in your state that is.

that's a dikk move by the employer.

It is probably not legal. Generally speaking, businesses are required to carry insurance to be legit. That insurance should cover damages caused by mistakes of employees.

There are exceptions, though. Like if they give you tools or equipment, they can deduct that.

Had a company in New York trying to do this to me a long time ago.

I called The Department of Labor and they assigned an investigator. I called my job to let them know about the situation and my money was in my mailbox 2 days later.

They wanted NOOOO Problems
