is it better to stay independent than to sign to a major label ?

you got cats like Chance The Rapper who is 100% independent but got one of the best management, publicists in the industry. he makes all his money from touring and merchandise. he got people loving his tapes, he doesn't have to release an album at all. he actually plans to never release a project for retail sale. he got the ability to do a song with Madonna just from a Jay Z co-sign/recommendation, he is performing on late night talk shows, he sells out shows, he was on Kanye's new album, etc. he gets to do whatever he wants without being forced to by a label.

depends on how hard you want to work. Nore's a good example, he's done both but prefers Majors cause he didn't have to do the behind the scenes shyt

i heard NORE talk about the industry a couple times. he was actually one of the first cats i heard say that they liked Lyor Cohen. but it's kinda good to be indie an do behind the scenes shyt, so that you make connections and network in the industry. that how i feel tbh.

If I still had to make it big, I would sign with a major and make sure I would own my masters. Once I have made it big, I would go independent

like when Tyler The Creator took that deal with XL Records to do 1 album, and own his masters ? he did that deal for his debut album, then left and he created a record label and got Sony Red to distribute his shyt.

these plants are giving you guys a false perception of an indie artist.

tyler the creator is a plant.

chance the rapper - I don't know enough about him to say if hes a plant or not. I think most of his placements & exposure may stem from the fact that he comes from a rich & well-connected family. either way, hes not a proper example.

yall rarely ever talk about indie artists on here unless theyre old rappers that went indie or new rappers pretending to be indie.

very true

just because someone isn't specifically signed to a major label does not mean they are not a major artist. Chance support system is equal to that of a major label, so even tho he is independent on paper its still a major eco system he works in.

Tyler was fully independent but once he got with Eminem's ex-pr/manager or whatever he pretty much became a major artist.

A true example of someone independent is Young Dolph. Dude is 100% indie and got where he at thru years of hard work (6+ mixtapes).

A lot of these artists that work in major ecosystems got yall fooled thinking indie is the way to go.

but he still independent tho.. i even said it in my first post that he is indie but he has good management and publicists to put him out there and then he made connections in the industry.

no that does not make someone independent. The term independent means doing it on your own. If someone has Unversal Records staff working on their project but they are not a Universal Records artist; they are not indie.

Yeah, a lot of the people that people point to as being "independent" aren't truly independent artist.

It's almost impossible to be an actual independent artist doing everything yourself, and make waves in the industry. Like you said most of the artists that people recognize as being independent either have a major league support system or are people that initially got their hype from being signed to a major previously.

it depends on what type of artists you are and your situation bro.. different strokes for different folks.. an artist like me, I'd have to be independent or signed but basically independent like a joey badass.. i like complete control over my music and don't like outside factors touching my shyt in anyway... i'm an aritst.. let me paint and leave me alone..
