Is it?

At the start of this gen it was a known unknown.

If crackdown 3 looked as good as early advertised it would have changed the landscape.

They didn't lie back then, they just wanted to harness the power of millions of always on xbox's to achieve their goal. Fans of the competition then made it seem like doing that = nsa :mjlol:

Crackdown 3 launches and it's not what was advertised. What is there is decent, but is being overlooked. So moving forward will the cloud factor into gameplay and/or graphics for our next gen games?

And if so, doesn't that mean game over for any competitor in the same target market? Serious question, i figure it's better to ask here than in n another thread :handshake:

So uh.. Microsoft flight simulator 2020 is said to have every airport and damn near the entire planet actually detailed in the game. That's just one tiny example of the cloud at work. Does this matter to you as a gamer?

Its possible at some point but there have to be streamlined programming/development methods and tools in place to utilize it properly.
In addition to coming up with efficient tools, I assume latency is a huge factor as essentially you're trying to utilize compute power from datacenters located elsewhere
and have it consumed and perform somewhere else. It takes a different mindset and tech stack from the coding of today which utilizes local compute power to render
everything.

Google stadia is here, Microsoft xcloud is here.
Current gen games are running flawlessly in 1080p today.

But you believe streaming just assets from a game would encounter all these latency issues? I can game right now on 4g from a lesser carrier and experience minimal latency. But we talking console gaming aka wifi.

Another thing, you play games at home online right? You not worried about that, but to stream data you think it's more difficult right? Well let me crunch some numbers for you. To run 4k 60fps latency free (to the human eye) only requires 35mbps. Can do 1080p fine with less than 5mbps. The resolution you receive is based on your connection. Merely reaching these stations isn't an issue because we online-game on these same stations today.

If you have any doubts about if the cloud will factor, here's a breakdown...

Yeah im talking more about using the cloud along the lines of how Crackdown was originally touted. Using/combining the extra compute power across multiple VMs/datacenters to make things bigger and better.
Streaming games serviced from single VMs in a datacenter is here and works.

Im saying it's just as easy to do what you're saying, it was just a matter of developers figuring out how to apply that in to game creation. You don't just become an expert at utilizing the cloud because it's available. Plus doing something like that won't work the same across platforms that didn't have access to the technology.

The way it would have worked for any third party to use on say, a playstation? They could rent the service from Microsoft. But it's free to use on xbox.

Moving forward Sony has joined forces with Microsoft and everyone seems to be clueless on how exactly. Well, everyone e except Courtdogstradamus of course :manny:

By trying to be innovative and ultimately being shutdown by internet fear mongers who claimed always connected would hinder the experience?

And on xbox the black protagonist thing isn't unusual :francis:

They tried and missed. That's all. It happens.
