I'm listening to this CurrensyXHarry Fraud tape and this motherfukker tagged himself in every damn song. Who started this shyt? I dont remember any of the great producers tagging themselves in every song. The closest I can think of is Just Blaze. Bottomline is that shyt is annoying. It was cool when I first heard it but now its like :shaq2: Takes the fun out of it compared to heairng a Premo song, not knowing its Premo and saying to yourself :krs: "Thats Premo!?"

you'll notice if it's a big name producer if they don't tag themselves the rapper usually name drops them in the track so they get notice regardless

I hear you but Harry Frauds name is on this mixtape. And I know he gets paid for the beats he indeed tags on. Like Shot Caller he had to get a lil money for it. That song probably gave him more money than anything because it was on the radio.

I mean if it's every song... blah.

But at the same time, if it's a producer on the rise, I can see why they do it. It establishes them as a name, especially if they're on a hot streak. It could only help to build their profile.

I think Pete Rock was the first to really let it be known who was doing the beat, cause he was known for his adlibs. He wouldn't say his name every time but you knew it was him when you heard him doing his ads.

But the first actual "tag" I remember was Rashad Smith aka Tumblin' Dice in the late-90s. It'd be a sound of dice shaking and then getting thrown on the floor before the beat started.

I'm tired of these MMG nikkas with that "Maybach Music" during all their verses. It's one thing when they do it on their own songs but they do it during other nikkas songs they featured on.

This.

Although the whole producers getting paid vs not getting paid for mixtapes thing is just a very complicated issue (Im still tryna figure it out myself. From what I gathered so far sometimes they do, sometimes they don't lol which isnt really saying much). I know Just Blaze charges extra to remove his beat tag. I normally don't mind beat tags but when I listened to Life is Good and that J.U.S.T.I.C.E League tag came in I was lil irked by it just cause I felt like it was tainted a lil bit. To each his own but I dont think I would tag a beat on a Nas album you feel me.

This right here is just corny as fukk. I aint going lie it sounded cool when they first started doing it. Especially when they would play the full joint at the beginning or end of songs (when the two females are talking). But there is no reason for rappers to have tags.

The only time its ever bothered me is with Jazzy Pha. I fukking HATED his tags. The Harry Fraud one I think sounds cool personally :yeshrug:

Though I do prefer them to tag it with a 'sound' like you can tell a song is produced by DJ Quik for the most part because he has that one bell he likes to use. Or Lex Luther has that ramping up synth.

Whenever I hear that "Mike will made it" tag it's like :ahh:

Mike Will with the turn table being turned off sound is dope too. It starts off 'Plain Jane' perfect.

DJ Premier does a drop but only on his mixtapes.....mixtapes and nikkaz stealing beats is what prompted producers to start tagging their shyt.....I remember certain producers doing this as early as '01......dont know who the first was but that is a good question.....
