Is Adult Swim just not popular enough to be it's own channel?

I just saw this article and wondered. I don't think they've ever separated the two have they? Nick at Nite eventually spawned TV Land.

They’ve never separated and it’s hard for me to see a financial reason for them to do so, especially in today’s age. Warner gets to take care of their respective demos in both blocks.

This does explain why that Superman cartoon is premiering on Adult Swim and not Cartoon Network despite not being particularly 'adult.'
